Germn WWI mine technology: "axle passer"
Years ago I heard something about some sort of device; called an "axle passer" I believe, that allowed German floating mines to evade the cables dragged by mine sweepers. Somehow, it allowed a mine sweeper cable to pass through the cable tethering the mine to the bottom. I've never been able to find anything on this.
Any clues? -Chris

Never heard of such a thing. But the concept is interesting. Minesweeper cable contacts the floating mine's tether. MS cable drags up the tether toward the mine, where it's somehow captured for a minute until the pull is too strong, then the device swivels and releases the cable?
