It'll take years to determine what went "wrong" (if that truly is the objective) and to implement any prescribed fixes -- plenty of time for al Qaeda to engineer something as devastating as Hurricane Katrina.

And you would think that an unprecedented Stateside attack would be enough justification to turn much of the Middle East into glass ....

It's just a theory.

Two comments regarding Matt's post:

1. "Careful mishandling" - that's quite an assumption on your part. Especially if you assume ALL this mishandling is rooted in our president. Aren't there many. many areas of government with folks in charge of these areas that can make decisions without the express written permission of the commander in chief? Yeah, there are. FEMA's one of those agencies. If all national government had to wait for the president's approval before they act, our government would never get anything accomplished.

2. I seriously think folks are going to start blaming Bush for the following:
- For the poor leevy construction. (I bet pictures are already circulating of Bush building the improper leevies.)
- The hurricane itself.

I believe George Carlin said something about how MAN thinks he's so in control of his environment. Then, all mother nature does is a little burp: a volcano erupts, a hurricane hits, an earthquake grumbles... and voila - man is put back in his place.

Contrary to what many believe, man cannot control his environment. And the 'damage' that we've done, IMHO, isn't as far reaching as we are led to believe. I'm not saying we shouldn't be kind to mother nature and do all we can to conserve our natural resources, but I don't think we should start crying "The END is nigh" just yet.

Oh, one more thing: if the USA COULD control the weather, why would they release a storm on our own soil? Wouldn't it be 'better to unleash ma nature upon our enemies? Or do you believe that the 1000's year old deserts in the mid east were also a plot formed by Mr. Bush and his cohorts?

All I'm saying is that it wouldn't surprise me if the Bush administration turned a blind eye to the consequences of global warming if they surmised that, by doing so, thousands of burdensome, resource-draining plebiscites would be "taken care of" so that more money could spent on democratizing Iraq.

It's not the same as saying that I subscribe to a particular theory.
