Dell GX270 problems-Bad motherboards

We have had an unacceptably high number of failures on our Dell GX270s. So our hardware guy gets on the phone with Dell, and it turns out there is an informal recall. The capacitors are lined up too close to the heatsink, causing early failure. Pop one open and you will see what I mean. The capacitors are so close that they nearly touch.

I am not sure if they plan to replace all of them, but they have been sending up motherboards as the old ones fail.

Might want to get proactive on this one....

Yup, seen it here at work... we have over 1800 computers on campus, all Dell, many are 270s

Who makes the board? May just be cheaper to swap them out as the cost without the processor and memory chip is usually not that great.

Dell uses a propriatary fan setup, and special connectors on the mobo for LAN, sound, etc. So you can't just drop in any mobo.

Good news is the GX series is the "business" line, and almost all come with a 3 year next day parts delivered warranty. I've called them for a bad board at 4:30 Thursday afternoon and had a new motherboard (and tech to install it!) at noon the next day.

I'm shocked...SHOCKED I tell you, that anyone has ever had a problem with Dell or a Dell product.

Get *****y enough with them and they'll be proactive for you.

Dealing with that company is like dealing with an addict:

"The problem isnt with our chipset, it's with (insert supplier name here)....we don't make mistakes, we're Dell."

Arrogant fuchs.

They were pretty forthcoming about this. You think Dell service is bad? Try Sony. Assclowns from the 3 ring of hell. We banned Vaio laptops just so we would never have to deal with them again.

I've been buying the PowerEdge 400SC and have never had a problem with one, althought I've had a few issues with the GX270...

Never dealt with Sony, dont think I'd want to.

Had too many bad experiences with Dell adn the way the handle large scale issues, probably it was the rep I had to work with. Seemed like every third or fourth model had major issues that needed a project to replace components on a large scale.

The rep was very vocal about making sure that these replacements were referred to as "proactive replacements"....not recalls. I'm sorry, what's the difference?

All of our Dell systems (3 generations of the GX line and 2 gens of the precision line) have worked flawlessly. only issue over the last 5 years has been 1 stuffed screen.
