Student Arrested After Pilot Uniform Found

The Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A university student from Egypt was ordered held without bond after prosecutors said they found a pilot's uniform, chart of Memphis International Airport and a DVD titled "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act" in his apartment.

The FBI is investigating whether Mahmoud Maawad, 29, had any connection to terrorists. He is awaiting trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number.

Maawad, who is in the United States illegally, told the judge during a hearing Thursday that he is studying science and economics at the University of Memphis.

"My school is everything. I stay in this country for seven years; I stay for the school," he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Parker said Thursday that the airport-related items were found during a Sept. 9 search.

"The specific facts and circumstances are scary," Parker said.

U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Thomas Anderson ruled that Maawad be held without bond.

"It is hard for the court to understand why he has a large concentration of those (aviation) items, and nothing else to indicate Mr. Maawad plans to stay in the community," Anderson said.

Maawad had ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, including DVDs titled "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings," "Airplane Talk," "Mental Math for Pilots" and "Mastering GPS Flying," FBI agent Thad Gulczynski testified.

The company reported Maawad to authorities when he didn't pay for $2,500 of merchandise it had delivered, Gulczynski said.

That is scary ****.

Found it on Sep 9th...wonder what his plans were for Sep 11?

Steeve 09-17-2005 05:03 AM

I don't understand something: he's in custody without bond. Why didn't someone just take him out back and shoot him? Seems like a no-brainer to me. He's wasting my oxygen.

efhughes3 09-17-2005 05:28 AM

Why the heck is any company shipping that much airplane related stuff to someone named Maawad?

bryanthompson 09-17-2005 05:40 AM

To think, the only reason he was caught was because he didn't pay for all of it. Now that is some scary *****.

Must have lost his Al Qaida credit cards...

Was it a Northwest or a Fed Ex uniform? Memphis a major hub for each. I fly through Memphis twice a week and I always wonder how secure the Fed-Ex portion of the airport is.

I hadnt heard this anywhere. Can someone verify or debunk it? I googled it and got nothing. I flew through memphis on Sept11 this year and everything was normal. I would think security would have been absurd if something like this had happened there.

If, god forbid, more people start spewing stuff like this, we will know the terrorists have won -- they will have made our society a mirror image of theirs.

Let's fight terrorism AND protect our American liberties at the same time.

How did he get into school if he is undocumented? When do we get control of the illegal immigration issue? How in the world can he wander around for 6 years undocumented and not get busted?

thanks for the link

Sometimes I try not to think too hard about a lot of the stuff I read here. I was just surprised that I hadnt heard it mentioned by any of the people I travel through the Memphis airport with on a weekly basis.

Im not surprsied at all if it happened. Does anyone know if it was Fed-Ex or one of the commerical carriers?

Steeve 09-17-2005 05:13 PM

Rodeo, he has no rights. Look at what he is guilty of:

1)He had been in the US illegally since 99... fradulent SS number etc.

2)prosecutors said they found a pilot's uniform, chart of Memphis International Airport and a DVD titled "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act" in his apartment.

3)charges of wire fraud

4)Maawad had ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, including DVDs titled "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings," "Airplane Talk," "Mental Math for Pilots" and "Mastering GPS Flying,"

Add to all of that the fact that he is still in college after SEVEN YEARS.

You would have to be a moron not to be able to connect those dots. Despite what all the dems would like, he does not need a hug and to be placed in time-out. We shouldn't have to wait for him to actually execute his plan successfully before we execute him.

efhughes3 09-17-2005 05:29 PM

It really does amaze me that scum like this still exists in our country. We should have deported every non-citizen student after 9-11, and made them apply to come back in. Then probation on a weekly basis.

I don't think that the fight against terrorism in this country and the ACLU can co-exist I'm sorry to say.

fintstone 09-17-2005 05:38 PM

Liberals would never stand for it. That would be "profiling."

The fact that this douchebag terrorist-in-training has enjoyed those "liberties" is the problem. Being able to get in (and stay in) the country illegally while doing things that should have raised a HUGE red flag is what has the potential to "let the terrorists win". I mean, Heaven forbid we "profile" anyone, or inconvenience someone IN THE NAME OF NATIONAL SECURITY IN A TIME OF WAR.

I wouldn't worry about our society becoming a "mirror image of theirs" anytime soon either. The US is not, and never will be anything like that of Islamic extremists. Now, if Americans start strapping bombs to their children, or start beheading innocent civilians in the name of their Deity-dejour, I will offer a full retraction.

I don't believe that any respectable terrorist organization would allow a sleeper to fail to pay a bill ..

They have plenty of money.

They also do not entrust idiots to further their cause ...

Why the guy had that stuff ... beyond me.
and they already shot their wad with the planes.
It's like throwing a ball to a dog, but not throwing it and hiding it belind your back .. misdirection, misinformation based on known fears and narrow vision ...
