Here she comes!

Here are the out lying bands of Rita (lower part of the screen, on the horizon).

I happened to be at JSC when tropical storm Frances came through years ago and I learned how close Houston actually is to the Gulf.

Hang on, man.

I'm still here. House is boarded up. Everything loose is picked up. Neighbors are set as well, just did a local neighborhood walk around.

how far inland are you? we have some friends that, after being stuck in traffic for eight hours and getting absolutely nowhere, went back home and decided to tough it out there. they're in the Clear Lake area

Clear lake is a bad place to be. That is between Houston and Galveston. We live on the Northwest side of Houston.

BTW, thw wind is really starting to pick up...

Thanks Cool and everyone for your concern.

Used to live near clear lake too - (Kemah, Nasa Rd 1) and that is NOT where you need to be. All low lying - nothing to buffer the winds. Ronin - hope they are OK - at least they will be on the weak side

thanks Jeremy. I'm keeping tabs on everyone there. ironically enough, last year when I first visited them down there, I thought holy cow if there is ever a hurricane blowing through here it will be pandemonium. everything is only inches above sea level and there are absolutely no obstructions to any sort of storm surge. my gf lived there until last year. fortunately now she's here safely with me

Everyone in the area has been told to shelter in place and not to try and leave. Clear Lake is NOT a place to weather a direct hit. A glancing blow from the "clean" side will hurt depending upon the rainfall and the wind. I have friends who decided to stay instead of bunking down at my place. I also have friends and family who are staying with me. My town more than doubled in size by yesterday.

I wish everyone the best of luck!! I stayed for them years ago, now I wonder how "smart" I was when I remember "playing" in all the high water...
