Need Windows XP help...
2 issues...
Did a clean install of XP wiping off the old Win2000 OS and data. Loaded XP with service pack 2, downloaded all critical updates from Microsoft. #1) Have a user account set up for both my wife and I. When I hit start> log off> switch user> get to the user screen, select icon for the other user, machine reboots. #2) When screen saver of any kind is active, the screen saver will come after "X" minutes, run fine, as soon as I touch the mouse or press a key, machine reboots. I am running Kaspersky Anti-Virus; system is free of virus/spamware etc. I think I have a driver issue. Any thoughts? -BG

I'd agree with your diagnosis. Try upgrading graphics drivers first.

Does it boot in safe mode?

When it reboots, it reboots just like if you hit the reset button on the box itself...
I can boot into safe mode if I want... ?

Try disabling the anti-virus, reboot the computer, and try some of the things that cause problems to see if it still reboots on its own. Question: did you format the harddrive before you installed?

I'd definitely try updating your video driver. Check in your Device Manager to see what driver is loaded. Update as neccessary.

Don't rely on windows update to get a video driver update.
look at the make and type of card that you have (eg ATI Radeon) and then go to the makers site to get the driver (catalyst 5.9 for the ATI card)

The behavior described sure sounds like a faulty driver. Do the system logs have an entry as to the cause of the reboot? |

SP2 came with my OS disc, I shall try and update the driver. The AntiVirus has nothing to do with the problem (its been tried).
Thanks for the help guys~!

SP2 caused problems when I installed it on some Dell notebooks. Check with your CPU manufacturer to see if there are any updates to fix probs with SP2 install.

I have installed SP2 :
with orriginal install disks with the sp2 patch cdrom with the download and install later via windows update via SUS and via WSUS with no problems on any of my desktops or laptops at work or at home. a freash install with an orriginal install sp2 CD should be no problem When you did the initial install, did the problem exist or was it only after doing all of the patches? are you doing an express update or a compleat update? if express, i would run the other just to be sure.
