Comments On Sony PSP?

I'm thinking about asking Santa for a Sony PSP. The gameplay is only a minor factor, I'm more interested in being able to surf the web at a WiFi cafe, listen to music, and explore the various hacks that people are developing for the PSP. The device seems pretty cheap for what it does, too.

Anyone here have a PSP and use those functions/hacks? Any feedback?

You need to hook up with my 15 year-old son. He's got one and is running Windows on it. I don't think he's ever played a game on the thing, but he was laying on his bed reading Wikipedia yesterday through the new wireless connection he rigged up...

He also hacked it to serve as a TV remote control.

He knows waaay too much about these things.

Mike, if he's willing, maybe you/he could PM me his email.

BTW, the thing with the PSP games, for me, is that none of the launch games interest me. I could care less about NBA, FIFA Soccer, Tony Hawk, etc. I'd like a good first-person shooter (Doom etc), a combat roleplay (like the Rainbow Six games), a flight simulator, a realistic driving game, etc. This stuff seems to be coming, but AFAIK isn't here yet. (Except TOCA, which I just found out is on PSP.)

If you want to use it as a PocketPC, why not just get a PocketPC?

A PocketPC with wireless is 2x more scratch and has 1/4 the gameplaying capabilities.

Be sure to search for "PSP firmware backdate" so you'll be able to take advantage of all of the hacks out there.

YMMV, no warranty express or implied by the above.

Thanks, Mike.

alf, I figure the PSP is pretty cheap and if I don't like/get tired of the non-gaming functions, I still have a game machine and by then there should be more interesting games available and/or I'll give it to the kids.

Hmm, did not know the price delta was that big between a PocketPC and PSP.

You should buy a PSP because Sony looses $$ on each sale

Same reason why i like buying books from Amazon...
