Bottom line - raise labor costs (as unions do), and the company is less competitive. They must build cheaper products to hold product price constant, or they must raise prices (while futilely hoping quantity sold doesn't decrease much) and build the same product. Simple as that.

Agreed. Pretty much the only way you can raise salaries long-term..across a workforce...is if production increases significantly. Even then, unless sales increase, the only way increased productivity can increase pay is if you are able to lay-off a portion of the workforce due to the increased productivity. Imagine suggesting that in a union shop.
