new tranny for the 4-runner: aamco?
The 4-runner is popping out of 2nd and 4th gear, 136K miles, and I think it is toast. One recommended place said $500 labor and then parts, but they won't even give me an idea of what "parts" would cost ("depends what we find when we're in there"). Anyone used Aamco for transmission work? I just want to get it functional as I'm selling it as soon as it is fixed. Or I could just sell it as-is, but I figure I'll get more out of it than I put into it by fixing it.

I had AAmco do a trans for me years ago. Worked out fine for me. If the warranty is transferable it will be a good selling point.

called them and have an appt tomorrow. They said between $650 and $1200 which works for me. I figure I can get $5K out of the 4-runner with it running well (it is a very clean '96, 4cyl 5spd 2wd), as opposed to maybe $2500 with it popping out of gear.

mom and pop place would probably do it cheaper and just as good a job, but $1200 is not a bad price.

Beware....It may be $1200 until they open it up.
Then your choice is "It's worse than we thought.....$2800"......"If you want we can close it up but you'll have to pay $500-$600 in labor...might as well fix it now while it's opened" This is an extremely common trans shop tactic. I'd ask my trusted mechanic who he uses.

AAMCO did the transmission work on my '79 Fiat X1/9 years ago. Cheaper than the dealership and had no problems with their work.

Aamco shops are independently owned and operated franchises ... the quality of work/honesty will vary greatly from shop to shop. And yes, transmission shops are notorious for raising the "estimates" once the thing is opened up. Read the fine print ...
