I've been out of touch here for awhile due to knee and shoulder surgery. We are still trying to find out where my wife can get transferred but a very good possibility has opened for her in Kansas City.
I'm basically wondering how yall feel about the cost of living (we like outdoors things and would want some land for our horses), areas that are nice, employment opportunities for me (Planner/Buyer), etc. No job offer yet, just kicking tyres. ![]() Thank you!!

Max and Bird, Billy Eckstein and Lester Young, back in the day. Them cats, coming out of Pittsburgh by way of Kansas City. Way back when. Willie Ladle up to Winton Marsalis and that crowd. You see, it was like this. Yeah, there I was in the basement of this office building, down there around Brooklyn Bridge. Rehearsals, see, and, like, there was Bird, Bird with his arm around Wynton Marsalis’ shoulder. Bent me all out of shape, I couldn’t figure what the hell Bird was doing with his arm around Wynton Marsalis’ shoulder. But then the scene changed, and then there was all these musicians, all these fantastic jazz musicians hustling and running across Brooklyn Bridge, descending into the city, the Big Apple, down there around City Hall. Bright and early one morning, just running. And there was this one cat that looked just like Lester Young. Than his image kept changing, than he started looking like Billy Eckstein, than back to Lester, than Billy, than Lester, than Billy. And ran up to him, and I said, “Say, man...” And I said to him, I said “Say man, who’s got the key?” He looked at me and he said “Key, what key?” He said “Gus got the key.” I said “Gus, Gus who?” He said “Don’t you know? Gus Johnson got the key.” And that’s when I did my research, searched around the jazz scene through the history of the music. Inside out, outside in. Talked to one old timer way back when, and he said “Yeah, don’t you known Gus Johnson, he's a drummer, back out of Kansas City.”
Whatever happened to Gus?

I was raised there and now live about 150 miles away, but still get there about once a month. My family now lives in Austin (Mom, sister) and Dallas (sister) so I think I can do a fair comparison. KC is a lot like Dallas in that no one lives in the city. Everyone lives in a suburb. Housing is a bit cheaper than Dallas, but not by much. Unemployment is generally lower than in the rest of the U.S. and a job is not hard to find. Winter is definitely colder than where you live, but usually not much snow and not before December and usually not past February. Weather wise will be getting used to the humidity in the summer. Plenty of things to do from museums to major league sports. Friendly town. If you have more specific questions, ask away.

No disrespect to KC (I actually really like visiting there), but if you want about the same climate and a city that is really up-and-coming (but still with low home prices), Omaha is the city for you. We have 4or 5 Fortune 500 companies, and they are always looking for qualified people. It's still a "small town", but we've got most of the same things any big city has - a great symphony, a beautiful art museum, brand new arena downtown, etc.

Steve,
Please tell everyone the difference between a winter in KC and one in Omaha. Then please tell us again why anyone should live in Omaha instead of KC? Guys, its beyond forking cold anywhere in Nebraska. Try it sometime, and you will see. I traveled there for a long time and and no way I could make due up there. Lived in St. Louis and spent a lot of time in KC. Always liked KC a lot more for some reason. Kurt was correct in his comments but then he used to live there!

I have lived in northern Illinois, New Jersey, Minnesota, Atlanta, Dayton OH, Winchester VA, and KC.
I like the size of the metro area (maybe 2 1/2 Million), the climate, the amenities, the shopping, the restaurants, the symphony, etc. We live in Clay county on almost 4 acres, that is zoned for horses, and I built my dream garage (36x60) (no horses) and have a 3400 sq ft house and pay about $3K in property taxes. MO has a 6% income tax however. Heartland Park is an hour and a half away, St. Louis about 4 1/2 hours, Hallet is 7 hours. MAM is about 6 hours. (Places where pca regions hold events).. I like the place.

Yea, after living in Omaha for 12 years, yes, a long time ago, I have to say I liked visiting Kansas City a lot. It just had that better feeling to me. Omaha is very cold and snowy, KC is 200 miles south and a bit warmer. I love the football stadium for REAL outdoor football. Overall, KC just felt more of a complete city, even though Omaha has come a long way recently. Just my 2c

Thanks Yall!!!
The wife and I want her to stay with her current company and KC is one place they have a position for her that we really like the idea of. I don't want to say the company, but it is a very good one. Redneck? I'm one of the two most redneck in my office here in Waco. The wife and I love to hunt, she loves horses, we both like the outdoors. I would miss the beach, but then again, I don't get there even once a year anymore so does it really matter? Dressy in Waco is a sports coat and I just don't really own a suit anymore. I've lived in Wyoming and know what Nebraska can get like in the winter. I've been in KC, but it was 10 years ago, so, thank you!!

If you make a trip up, make sure you talk to some of the local guys on here first. There's a lot of cool places to see if you know where you're going. It's a good size, not too big compared to some, but you still get pro baseball and football. That is, if you consider the Royals pro, last few years have been pretty dismal. Plus if you like college sports you get KSU football and KU basketball fairly close. If you like hunting and the outdoors you'll love it, drive a few hours to central KS for hundreds of acres of hunting. In fact, many farmers in central KS make a good living hosting hunters from KC during the season. Milford and Tuttle Creek are both large lakes, only a few hours away near Manhattan, and there's many smaller lakes all over the state. Go in Kurt's direction to MO and there's even more, including beautiful ones like Table Rock. Cheap living compared to many big cities, friendly people. there's a lot to like. Plus you can hang with these great guys.
www.kcws.org Ask Kurt, they're a great bunch.
