I dont want a hood scoop! Help
I have been working on a 318i M10 turbo for some time now and have run into a small problem. I used the stock manifold, flipped it upside down, and made an adapter for the T3 flange. I made the adapter as low as possible, theres just enough room to tighten the nuts.
Problem is the turbo touches the hood when its closed. Its going to burn the hell out of it. So I need to raise the hood in that section (4" x 4"). I dont really want to put a ricer scoop on one side of the hood. Anyone see any nice looking way to do this? |
Can you subtly flare the hood a bit and add some cermic insulating material? It's a lot of work but will save you the hood scoop.

Instead of a scoop, how about a "bubble"? Those beautiful long nosed cars of the early 60's did it all the time...hoods with mysterious bumps on them...usually for carb clearance.

If doing it yourself, I'd suggest making a rough design out of cardboard...then visit a Detroit car wrecking yard & start matching curves...you might find what you're looking for on a crumpled trunk lid corner, a fender curve, wherever. If that panel has been hit, the wrecked-em yard would sell it for next to nothing...

Terry, I would think about cutting a circle in some particle board then throwing a sheet of old truck tire inner tube on it. Next find a hard large ball (bowling ball maybe?) then carefully postion the hood over the hole and smack the ball with a large mallet thus cold forming the bubble into the hood. If the paint is warmed first it may not even crack. I would experiment on a scrap pc of sheet metal first though and be sure to size the hole properly.

Actually, I do not think a little scoop like on the WRX's looks too bad. IMHO, a bubble may look a little odd, but you could probably find one to use from like a Turbo Mitsu Eclips or similar, didn't they have one?

LOL, I always wondered why that guy purposely put that turbo that high. He could have obviously cut atleast a foot off of it.

Terry, I would steer clear of a power bulge. The whole POINT is to make people think that you have a bone stock 98 hp four-banger under there!

Any chance of actually raising the entire hood? Put on a side panels where the hood meets the fenders.
BTW - I like the lil scoop you found. |
Terry, is it hitting the outer skin of the hood or some of the inner bracing? Would some sort of grill-type panel painted with hi-temp paint and flush (or close to flush) mounted work?
Several of the FWD Chryco cars used a low profile "bulge"; Daytonas and Shadows had them as well as a couple of the Omni hatchback cars probably some others. |

Didn't the Ford Probe have a small bump in the hood? Might be a suitable graft.

Terry, it is kind of hard to tell in the picture, but it looks like you have room to tilt that turbo out toward the shock tower. It seems you would just need to make a couple of flanges and weld in a short bent pc of tubing and your protrusion problem would be cleanly solved. If you have a drill press, hole saw and have or know someone with a welder, you should be able to do this.

The problem is the flange that connects to the mani is a pretty complicated design. They dont sell them and it would be a bi tch to cut out of 1/4" plate. I think I've gotten to far to go back to redesigning the adapter. Plus, this design will allow for a much bigger turbo in the future (housing won't touch the head). And I'm.......lazy.

Well Terry, I dont know what to tell you. If you lived closer and you brought the beer, I would be glad to help you fab one up.
I doubt the perimeter shape matters much and each oval port could be closely approximated with two small hole saws and a larger one in the middle (cut each hole 90% thru then finish them the rest of the way and blend the transitions with a file/die grinder). I have cnc machines available at work, but I myself would still just probably fab one up using old school techniques at home as I hate to ask the machinists at work for too many favors. |
I appreciate the offer. If I had a CNC machine, aahhhh, the possibilities. Hard part about that piece is there is a little lip that the tubing seats into. I would need a lathe and some skills to make that.
I wonder if they will let me AutoX without a hood.....somehow I doubt it although I dont see it in our rules. All the intercooler tubing, couplers and oil lines are on the way so this should be running by the end of the month. I'm so tempted to Megasquirt it instead of the FMU but I'll wait and see how she runs. |
I will be interested in hearing how it works out, I often contemplate turboing (is that a word?) my 911 SC and maybe even my 924 (just for yucks). I know the SC's stock fuel delivery system will work with a low boost system, but the 924 would need more fuel than the stock system will deliver (aux fuel enrichment ie: 5th injector comes to mind).
Good luck and just cut a hole in the hood and worry about a scoop or bump made of fiberglass or metal later. |
