Charlottesville, VA to DC area twisties???

On Friday, I'm going to have all day to travel between Charlottesville, VA and the DC area (Falls Church), and am looking for a good 'twisty' route for the p-car. The 'Skyline Dr' route that cuts through Shenandoah Nat. Park looks promising, but is there a better option? Any suggestions are welcome from you guys that know the area...Thanks!

sivaDseliM 10-18-2005 07:38 AM

Yeah, for twisties you can't really do much better than Skyline to 211 to Warrenton. I'll think about it. I was just down there this past weekend.

Thanks "Miles" ...I really had to LOOK at your username for a second :)!

That is a good route. Although it is not a direct answer to your question, be forwarned if you end up on 29 watch out for Green county and Madison county police. They are serious revenue collectors.

211 is a great road. Skyline is as well, but watch the deer, tourists and radar.

I made that drive several years back during the fall (on business, intentionally took the back roads), it had to be one of the most scenic "americana" drives I have ever made. Absolutely beautiful during the fall colors.

jbryant 10-18-2005 02:50 PM

NO NO NO.

Skyline drive will have the leaf watchers out.

You want to take: 29N to 234 through Madison/to Sperryville, Then 211 to route 522 N, then make a right on route 647 (this is one of the best roads ever.) to route 55, then make a right and go about 6 miles and make a left on route 709 to rt 50. then go right for about 30 miles to route 66. then 66 east to Falls Church. You will not regrete this...

Make sure you wave hi to me on the way through.
I live in Scottsville 20miles south of C-Ville and i work on the northside of C-ville.I Drive the back road twisties every day.
Because of the traffic and the road construction and the kill-joys (police) Having fun around here without knowing the back roads is kind of hard to do.
If you come up 29 by the airport stop into Airport Rd. Auto center and say Hi. Enjoy your day the weather is slatted to be great.

Hey Keith,
Whatcha doing up here? I still owe you a beer for checking out my car for me!

Take VA647 and VA688 and Carter's Run road (all pinched between I66 and Rt 211).

All good roads!

True. Tho this weekend probably won't be the worst in terms of "leaf-peepers", the alternate route jbryant mentioned is a good one.

The route that jbryant laid out from Sperryville north has been used on more then a few fun runs for us NoVa p-car fans ... definately some great roads.

As also mentioned be sure to keep an eye out for the cops on 29.

Have fun and enjoy :)

Thanks a bunch everyone! I was hoping that since it's during the day on Fri. (and considering the fall colors aren't great this year), that the leaf watchers would be at a minimum. I've never done the Skyline Dr. but figure that it's similar to the Blue Ridge Pkwy (i.e. senic, but filled w/ slow leaf watchers and radar), so I'm interested in the route above. I'm confused however, when I look at maps.google. I can't locate Sperryville using a search, and 29N seems to fork north of Madison. I see a 29N/231 (to the left), and a 29N/634 which bears off to the right...which one is correct? I'm so confused :)....I can't locate a lot of these routes (234, Sperryville, 647, etc.) as they seem to have "name's" on google. Can someone confirm that the routes listed above, or point me to a better map online? Steve, my g/f and I are going to see our favorite band at the Starr Hill in C'ville on Thur. and then leisurely driving over for more of the same in Falls Church Fri. night. Just a weekend getaway...and an opportunity for a nice drive :) Thanks again for all the suggetions!

688 is Leeds Manor Road
647 is Crest Hill Road
They intersect in Hume, VA, which is a real podunk but you should be able to find it.

The leaf peepers ar dangerous. I was up on skyline last week in the 911 and they brake suddenly and for no reason, forcing me to brake in the turns (I wasn't really going that fast ;) )

KFC911 10-19-2005 06:47 AM

Thanks Steve (and everyone else)...I've got it all figured out now.

jbryant 10-19-2005 12:57 PM

"They intersect in Hume, VA, which is a real podunk but you should be able to find it. "

Hey! I live a mile from Hume and we are very civilized here!

Keith-PM me if you want my phone number. I can walk you through it if you get lost.
"I see a 29N/231 (to the left), " This is correct, I missed typed 234.

Rick V 10-19-2005 02:12 PM

Make good and sure you lock your car while at Star Hill. There are some people in the neighborhood there who like other peoples stuff. Other than that you will like C-ville.
P.S.
Charlottesville cops love out of state cars being a coledge town and all.

LOL. No offence intended. :D

It's funny that you're in Delaplane, the first 911 I looked at was there. 2 miles down a gravel road/driveway x 10 years of ownership. Ask my why I didn't buy it ;) Plus, I would have deprived Delaplane of the other 911. :)

jbryant 10-19-2005 04:44 PM

No offense taken :)

I get to take your Fun Run routes to work EVERYDAY!!

I live 3 miles from my office and it takes 1 hour to drive home sometimes;)

KFC911 10-20-2005 03:06 AM

Thanks everyone! I'm planning to follow jbryant's suggested route...about how long are we looking at for 'driving time', between C'ville & Falls Church? We've got all day to get there, so are there any 'must see' places to see/stop at along the way? I like the Starr Hill, and though I've parked my van nearby before, I would never leave a 911 (w/ out of state plates) there. Besides, since it IS a brewery too, we always taxi to/from a show :)...

VaSteve 10-20-2005 04:57 AM

Keith
It's about 2 hours straight shot up 29.

I found some additional roads I drove once around Charlottesville in the 911. Rt 20 north of town was nice as well as 649 (Proffit road).
