Anyone ever ship a dog?

Hey everyone,
I have been reading Off Topic for over two years and it seems to me that someone always knows great info about any possible question asked. So, let me throw one out to everyone. Has anyone ever shipped a dog (puppy) across the country? If you have is their anything you would have done that you didn't? Any airlines to avoid?

I am very seriously considering getting another German Shepherd and I have found one that I absolutely love. The only problem is he is located outside of Riverside California and I am in upstate South Carolina. The breeder assures me that she does this all the time and there is nothing to be worried about. I would make sure that he goes on a direct flight (LAX to Atlanta) and the breeder said that is the only way she sends them.

Am I crazy or is this really nothing to be worried about? Thanks for any advice.

Shipped our dog in '90 from DFW to RDU and he ended up at LAX. The staff there took great care of him and sent him back to RDU on the next direct flight, we got him back the next day. He arrived in great shape and very chipper but definitely ready to be out of his kennel. He passed away 2 years ago but we still joke about his cross-country trip. I'd be comfortable doing it again, as strange as it sounds probably even more so based on the way they handled the destination mixup. He was clearly treated well on the trip.

I've done it several times, I would recommend delta dash flights.

Thanks guys,

I will most likely send him on Delta, they seem to be who most breeders recommend. I read on their website they also have climate controlled holding facilities at LAX and Atlanta for pets. I think I am going to put the deposit down tonight for the puppy as the breeder is sending me more pictures tonight. Most likely I will have him shipped mid next week if everything goes as planned--I have some puppy proofing to do. Thank you again.

No, not crazy and should not worry. I've purchased and shipped German shepherds for years, sometimes internationally. Any reputable breeder is familiar with the process and requirements. Just confirm this is something they've done. Obviously, best to ship non-stop direct.

Curious what is it about this shepherd or breeder in Riverside that you like?

I have family in upstate SC and go back regularly (Landrum, SC).

Regards.

The breeder has shipped many dogs and said she will take care of everything, we just let her know when we want him. All of our previous dogs have been rescues from the pound or shown up on the doorstep as puppies. I have always wanted a German Shepherd, a good friend had one and I was always impressed with just how smart the dog was--smarter than many people I know.

My brother purchased a puppy last year from her and had a wonderful experience. He has been thrilled with his dog and has made great strides in training him for just one year. He lives in Arizona so he didn't worry about shipping. I guess it is a situation where I am going with what I know and she has a puppy with the markings that I am after. A local one would be easier but nothing is available that I am interested in.

rrpjr, let me know when you are in town--we have a few local Pelicans around here if you need an escape from the family for an afternoon. Thanks again everyone.
