FYI to CA shooters - magazine disconnect and loaded chamber indicator requirements.
I was browsing the CA Attorney General's firearm law site and noticed that effective 1/1/06, CA will start phasing in a requirement that semi-auto handguns have a magazine disconnect and a loaded chamber indicator.
As I read the law, starting 1/1/06 centerfire semi-auto pistols will not be certified for sale in CA unless they have either a magazine disconnect or a loaded chamber indicator. Starting 1/1/07, they must have both a magazine disconnect or a loaded chamber indicator. Starting 1/1/08, rimfire semi-auto pistols must have both a magazine disconnect or a loaded chamber indicator. I think that pistols that are already certified but lack these features may be sold until the certifications expire. This restriction would apply to importation and to sale by dealers, not AFAIK to private party sales. Many current handgun designs have either or both of these features. But not all. One family of gun I am considering, the various models of S&W 1911, lacks either, and the certifications expire during 2006. Accordingly, I'm planning on buying mine well before the certifications expire, just to avoid any problems. Current Glocks also lack these features, AFAIK. [Edit: No, they have a chamber indicator now.] Just a heads-up.
