www.caffevita.com is amazing.
www.coffeepeople.com ....some unique blends.
www.illyusa.com ....they started it all....

:D well said.

Cafe Lusso in Redmond gets my thumbs-up.
They roast some of the coffee for Trade Joes (regionally). It's a mostly smallish roasting operation .. .a bit of a hole in the wall, over by the Mac & Jacks brewery. . . but geez does that guy make some outstanding coffee.

"Balance" is apparently the key. If you want a cappuccino, he uses one type of coffee, Americano, another ...

Anyways, you know how coffee always seems to smell better than it taste? . ..there it tastses as good (or better) than it smells.

p.s. Hard Drive - Thanks for letting Red Beard have his avatar back. ;)

I hear that french presses have led to higher cholesterol counts than paper filters in certain studies. But then again I use a gold filter, does that count? Also, my favorite coffee drink may be just good old coffee. An americano done right is a close second.

I'll second the french press, cheapo grinder method. Here in western Nova Scotia, we've been using beans from a 'fair trade' place about an hour away. Whenever we're by there, we pick up 4 - 6 pounds of beans French Roast, Jungle Blend and decaf FR. No affilliation, but their website is www.justuscoffee.com, they do orders.
When we're on the road, yeah, its Tim's. Only trouble there is the variation in quality from location to location. Its not the product, just the training and adherance to procedures. Sigh.

If you're getting into great tasting coffee, imo you need to think about roasting your own beans (or finding a local roaster that keeps a FRESHLY roasted supply), as that is the key to flavor. l've gotten spoiled with my own coffee over the past few years...I now home roast 'green beans' weekly (ordered online at roughly half the price of roasted, no particular favorite). I've got several that I keep on hand, burr grind 'em right before I brew, and am just really getting into it, but freshly roasted beans is what it's all about :)

That's what Evren does...orders green coffee beans from all over the world, does his own roasting, makes his own blends, etc....me? I just grind already roasted beans. Usually bought at Costco... I'm sending Evren a link to this thread, it seems to be right up his alley. I mean, how many of you spent months restoring an old espresso maker? ;)

scottmandue 10-25-2005 11:18 AM

I vote for fresh grind, french press, 200 degree bottled or filtered water makes the biggest difference.

As for beans I buy them whole at Trader Joes, dont' now if you got them where you are at.
I realy like the Sumatra, and pure Kona, beware of Kona blend it can be as little as 10% real Kona.

I also had to cut way back because of my blood presure but if I am going biking or hiking I will treat myself.

I second Trader Joes...Dark Roasted Yemen.....hehehehe....the buzzzzzz is on......

tabs 10-25-2005 12:05 PM

Get a good Espresso maker and good burr grinder....then Roast em if you like...I make one or 2 Lattes everyday...I don't even order coffee out anymore...simple really..

scottmandue 10-25-2005 12:39 PM

Oh yeah Yemen was my other favorite... I have been off the coffee buzz for so long I forgot that one.

Or you can move to Seattle. :D

Walk into a roaster and pick up the beans warm every day. I don't know if every one has it, but our Costco has a roaster right in the store. Also, Island 911 is right about Trader Joes. Their coffee is down right cheap, and pretty good quality.

I really like the coffee I get from this site:

http://www.ccmcoffee.com/

Easy to find in Florida, not available outside the area except by internet.

That's the site I use most of the time...I usually buy in bulk, and they are by far cheaper on shipping than other sites...plus great beans. My favorites (which I usually mix scoops of each morning) are Yemen, Zambia, Costa Rica, and Indian Peaberry (among others)...I've never tried the Jamaican Blue Mountain :(...I'm afraid I'd like it $$$!).

MikeCT 10-26-2005 07:23 AM

I'm going out to pick up a grinder and french press today. I'm going to go to Trader Joes because one has just opened not too far from here.

That's where I got started Evren, a great site & great beans, but I like CCM's prices better. I guess I've only gone 'part of the way there' since I'm still using a drip machine...I'm going to have to check out a French Press after reading some of these posts. Suggestions anyone?

evren 10-26-2005 09:21 AM

thanks Keith, I will check out CCM as well. you can make some great coffee with a drip machine, just need to make sure your water temperature is high enough, just below boiling. one of the best coffee setups is simply a paper filter with a plastic holder -- just pour v. hot (~95C) water over it. -Evren

MikeCT 10-26-2005 02:00 PM

so I bought an inexpensive grinder and a french press this afternoon. Unfortunately Trader Joe's wasn't opened yet but my sister got a pound of Starbucks french roast (it's free so I don't complain and free foodstuffs taste good anyway). I think I need some practice grinding up the beans and getting the right grind for a 5 minute steep cause the first batch was kind of weak.

pwd72s 10-26-2005 06:19 PM

Oh-Oh! I showed Cindy this thread. I was not so politely informed that if I didn't like the cup of Joe she delivers to bedside each morn, I can be the one to turn up the thermostat and make the coffee...time to shut up now :o
