Coffee Gurus

My sister got a job at Starbucks recently and she gets to take home a pound of coffee each week, so I have been drinking a lot of coffee lately and trying a lot of different coffees. I think starbucks has some good coffee but I am sure there is much better out there. What are some of the better coffee's to try? Are there any stores that would be easy to find that sell a wide range of coffees? Is it anything like trying to find microbrews? Also I am using a Bunn (NHB?) for making coffee, what is the cost of good coffee machine? It seems like an interesting hobby.

According to statistics, we Swedes drink a lot of coffee. Among the most popular brands is a manufacturer called Zoegas. Its rather strong but popular among hospital employees - where we usually have 8 - 10 cups a day. Its made in the City of Helsingborg in the south of Sweden.

Wand me to send you a sample ?

try Petes of Seattle. You live in CT? Your miss'n out if you don't go to Mister Donut. Best java around. Also, your getting some Tim Hortons donut shops coming in around your parts - very good coffee as well.

If you can find a real German gournet grocery store, look for Jacobs (green package) or Dallmayr (gold and brown package). That stuff is the best.

Seattle is mecca for coffee.

Starbucks is....ummmmm........servicable.

www.caffevita.com is amazing.
www.coffeepeople.com ....some unique blends.
www.illyusa.com ....they started it all....

Starbucks is burnt over roasted crapola.

Try to find some whole bean Puerto Rican Yaucono (sp?), Hawaiian Kona, or (the holy of holies) Jamaica Blue Mountain. For real JBM you'll be paying upwards of $50/lb, but worth it.

Thanks for the info. I figured starbucks was kind of the Sam Adams of coffee: pretty good and easy to find but there is definitely better.

Try the coffee at Burger King they are advertising 3 Types
1 Decalf
2 Regular
3 TURBO
I don't think I have the cahonies to try any kind of coffee labeled turbo

Sorry to bring everyone down but I recently had too cut down ALOT on my coffee habit. I had a complete physical and found I have high blood pressure. Stress mixed with too much coffee is most likely the cause. I cut down to two-three cups of caffeine a day and it has dropped my pressure down to normal. Taking a pill each day too but the doc said the coffee cutdown made the most dramatic effect. Ok, I was consuming around 12-20 cups a day but that had nothing to do with it.;)
Ok, preaching session is over. Go have a cup a joe, guys!

Start with quality beans, grind fine just before use, use a french press, use water at +/- 200 deg F (not boiling), steep for at least 5 min before pressing.

Drip coffee will never again suffice.

Major Dickason's rocks

These guys bought Spinelli's of San Francisco, who used to be my fav. Not quite the same, but better than Starbucks:

Up here in Ontario Tim Horton's is it. They are everywhere. I swear they put something in that stuff that keeps us lemmings coming back for more. The drive-thru line ups are insane. I think they are owned by Wendy's and are starting to expand in the U.S.

Peets Major Dickason's blend.
Flying Goat Coffee from Napa.
Illy- Classic espresso.
Torrefazione Saetebello. A lot like Illy.

My favorites are Peets and Illy.

ok...maybe I am. But not about coffee.

well, I'm nuts about Peets coffee but...

nevermind

Icemaster 10-24-2005 03:13 PM

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but I web-order 2-3 pounds of Major Dickason's from Peets quite regularly.

They've got some righteous other roasts as well.

Starbucks is OK if you other choices are Folgers or Maxwell House.

major dickason's followed up by a close second with the Fair trade blend. both Peet's offerings.

i also use a french press. IMO, nothing comes close. fresh grind with the cheapo grinder, into the press, pour the hot water, stir with chopstick, and let it steep. plunge, drink....

for espresso, nothing touches ILLY. dont even try. oh, i have a friend that manages a Peet's, so i get the deal. 50%

Damn Vash, feel like placing an order for me?

Hmmm. 5 questions, 1 paragraph. Time to lay off the coffee. :)

There was a place in Albany, Ca. The Royal Cafe, I think. On San Pablo. A great breakfast place. They served Peets at the table with a do-it-yourself french press. Beautiful. You're right about it being the absolute best. It's also the cheapest and quickest!

On the other hand, I'm constantly baffled at the number of restaurants that serve coffee that was clearly an afterthought. Inexcusable.
