As of January, one of the two remaining rock stations In New York City, 92.3 KRock, will be going to "talk radio" . No more music. Leaving only one rock station left 104.3.
Yes folks thats right. Only one rock station left in NYC! WTF!!! ![]() Is this happening anywhere else? There has to be at least 30 "hip-hop" and top 40 ( which are basically Hip-hop)stations. Are that many people turned of to rock and roll and classic rock, or am I just turing into an old fart.. ![]() Its sad ![]() I guess its time to bite the bullet and get satellite.

I stopped listening to the radio for music years ago. They don't play anything I like.
I think that radio is ignoring a huge, untapped market. Maybe it's pushing people like me to satellite radio?

Rock is dead...
Rock and roll was rebel music, it has become so commercialized, mainstream, and pasteurized it has lost it's heart and reason for being. I mean, who wants to listen to a bunch of TV commercial soundtracks? I watched a documentary on Punk and the same thing happened there. Punk was started as an anti-Establishment statement, then it became popular, then they got rich, then they became part of the establishment. I believe Rap is following the same trend. Fortunately I have a group of friends who are musicians and we can stilll get together and at least play rock n roll. Never ceases to amaze me how much people like to hear us play in a garage even though we are a bunch of old guys who suck. By the way we still have at least three rock stations here in Los Angeles (neener-neener)... although two of them play girly rock. Rock on Grath. ![]()

I've been in nearly every state we have, exept for Maine, NY, and the upper east.
I've listened to radio in all of those states. I firmly believe that Seattle has the best Rock station in the US. http://www.kzok.com I moved back to Seattle because KZOK wasn't webcasting... |

KSHE in St. Louis is one of the best... or was, the last time I was there. Phoenix has several good rock n roll stations...

Best thing in NYC right now is JacK FM (101.1) No stupid DJs. True, they play a very eclectic mix. I mean, one night I was listening and they segued from Frank Sinatra into Metallica into Madonna. But it was all good stuff. I really like this format.
As far as rock goes...we also have WDHA over here in NJ. They have NEVER, EVER changed their format. Still playing the same stinky hair bands and grunge dudes as ever. Worst station: WPLJ. I loathe Scott and Todd. Best talk show on the drive home is Wendy Williams on WBLS. Once in a while she will read her listener's e-mails...just hysterical.

Only bad thing about Jack FM, is one second Lynyrd Skynard then next song is Eminem! Cant deal with that!! Ive noticed that they tend to gravitate more toward top 40, with a sprinkle of older stuff tossed in.
There are alot of great rock stations around NYC, WDHA The Hawk 105.7 all out of NJ but they have weak signals. So listening area is very small.

this Jack format is not good for DJ job security right?
i think rock changed when they started to rap. i like some of the stuff, Korn, faith no more....but i miss the great guitar and drum solos. i finally installed my sirius system in my work truck were i spend the most time. i LOVE it! i pick a theme and it just goes on.

See that's what I like!. When I am at home I like to put iTunes on shuffle and it will mix everything in my library...Jazz, Classical, Rock...it never get's stale. Jack isn't as radical as my home iTunes, but still it's pretty good.

I have made a living for many years playing songs that radio has ignored. Call it what you want, classic rock, ect. But some of us here grew up in a golden age of rock...never to be seen again. It will finally die when WE all die. Till then...come and hear us and have a good time.

Even though we have a few decent stations in Elay(KROQ, 103.1) the ability to hear good music without being hit with a ton of advertising is tough. I find myself either listening to NPR stations with music programs or to KKJZ a jazz station (NOT "smooth jazz"). Some of the classical stations aren't bad either. Maybe I'm just getting older and mellower, but if I have to listen to Van Halen's "Jump" or Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer" one more time....
