HP laptop power cord problem, opinions?

Long story short, the ac plug on the motherboard in my HP laptop has broken, it wont recieve a charge.

I have two options, 1. I can buy the plug and replace the old one. 2. I can buy a cable intended for expansion packs, and power the laptop through the expansion port. Anyone deal with this before? Bothe the plug and the cable are the same price. |

I replace them all the time on Toshiba laptops. Takes me about an hour (these days) to take the laptop apart, clean up the MB resolder a new pwr jack and put the thing together. It might be easier to get the expansion port option.

Are there any issues with soldering on a motherboard such as this? wattage, things to look out for, etc...?

I use a standard Weller soldering station. Not a Radio Shack soldering iron. The iron has a small flat tip - not sure of the size. The PCB can stand a fair amount of heat. I use a solder-wick to suck up the old solder, remove the pwr jack, remove any left over solder on the PCB, clean old resin from PDB, either clean the pwr jack or replace with a new one. Hot glue is then used to 'weld' the pwr jack to the MB. Do not use a soldering gun.

The biggest problem are the screws. There are quite a few and they are different sizes and must all go back in their correct locations. Dave

Take plenty of digital photos if possible. Makes getting things back together easier if you get stuck. DON'T force anything.

PCB boards are pretty tough, just don't slop solder all over. I put a blob of epoxy down to hold the power jack in place for the long haul.

I had the same problem with a hp zd 7000.

I went the new jack connector route. It has lasted about 4 months and is starting to short again. I would go with the expansion cable. BTW- where do you get one? Jim
