Iron Chef on the Food Network
Normally the product of channel surfing, always looks interesting and I end up staying on it for a period of time. I am now becoming a fan of Iron Chef and even American Iron Chef. It is a bit corny but how cool would it be to judge those dishes they create.
Anybody else ever watch those shows?

Pretty sure the tie episode was a re-run. But I LOVE the show. I never miss it. I like the American version more, but the original is interesting. I like Alton Brown, and his show Good Eats is one of my favorites. He makes it interesting, mixes some of the science with the normal cooking.

Iron Chef rocks. In fact, I'm wearing my Gormet Academy T-shirt right now in preparation for my own Paella Battle tonight:
![]() Wikipeda has a nice summary of the original cult classic. I really enjoy the quality of the translation, especially for the typically vapid movie starlet judge, "...the ice cream is going round and round." I've been fortunate to eat at both Sakai's and Kenichi's restaurants in Tokyo, along with Morimoto's places in the US. Michiba is next on my culinary adventure list... My favorite facts from the original: Broadcast history The stage setting for the show, "Kitchen Stadium" (キッチンスタジアム), the high-quality (and sometimes very expensive) ingredients used in the cooking battles, and Kaga's extravagant costumes required the show to have a budget far higher than that of most other cooking shows. Some statistics: 893 portions of foie gras, 54 sea breams, 827 Ise shrimp, 964 matsutake mushrooms, 4,593 eggs, 1,489 truffles, 4,651 grams of caviar, and 84 pieces of shark fin were used during the show, bringing the total grocery bill to ¥843,354,407 (or about $8,000,000). One of the most expensive battles was Battle Swallow's Nest, which ran over $40,000 solely for that ingredient, not counting large quantities of shark's fin; for the battle, the producers were permitted to return any unused portions to Hattori Nutrition College. Chairman Kaga, who tried every dish, consumed a total of 10.0 gigajoules (2,390,000 calories).

Iron chef is pretty good. I like Alton Brown, his science behind the food and cooking is very helpful. Another great show is with Tyler Florence, great tips on improving everyday dishes.
My faves are Giada DeLaurentis (Everyday Italian). Although I dont cook italian much, shes just great to look at! Sandra Lee is good too. Emeril and Rachal Ray just get on my nerves. Another good cook is Mike Colameco, on PBS. The shows only on on sundays though. I really wish they would run Justin Wilsons shows again.

Anthony Bourdain's (sp) No Reservations program is my favorite.
The IC is getting real old. I swear that one of the frequent judges looks just like a grasshopper.....

On the original IC the Japanese actresses had some of the best (translated) comments:
"Oohhh... This makes me want to clean out my stomach!" - I'm pretty sure this meant that she wanted to make room for more of the dish, but stomach pumping does come to mind. Somewhere out there is the "Iron Chef Drinking Experience" drinking game. Extra drinks if the ingredient of the day is alive when taping begins. Mike '78 SC |
