It could only come from a Porsche lover
Last night while the endless caravan of goules and goblins paraded around the neighborhood my yard became a hangout for the older people to wait for the youngins to to finish thier quest. One of the folks waiting was an older gentelman who noticed the Porsche shaped cover in the driveway and started to tell me all about the 911e he used to have, how he loved the car and how he decided to park it in the undercarrage of a delivery truck. It was almost sad to see his eyes go from the happy times to the rememberance of the early demise of his friend.
After the mad rush of candy grubbers had calmed down (and the wife gave me permition to leave my post) we went to the driveway and I uncovered the SC. He walked around it and asked if he could sit in her. I held the door happy to make the older mans evening. He sat behind the wheel grabbed it in both hands, leaned back in the seat , and with closed eyes pronounced "I miss that smell most of all"

Sometimes the 'treat' in Halloween comes from an unusual angle.
I was anchored in Avalon, Catalina last night. The shoreboat made the rounds to all of the yachts with all of the indigent kids from town. Most didn't speak English. We in the harbor had been alerted by the shoreboat drivers thru the day, and were stocked up for the gang. I guess the pickings in town were slim for them. Their parents were almost in tears, some of these kids had not laughed in a long time. Same thing Rick. I was the one that felt treated.

When I bought my 968 a couple of years ago, my mentor, friend and Chief (navy type) sat in it for the first time. He had owned a 914 and a 911SC previously. His first comment was "Well, it smells like a Porsche." It's funny how well we can remember those details.
Driving some cars is transportation, driving a Porsche is an event.

Harry Pellow, patron saint of 356 owners, once said "Its the second best smell in the world". When the MFP (member of female persuasion) who was interviewing him asked what the best smell was, St. Harry said that it wasn't polite to discuss in mixed company.
Rick - you shoulda handed him the keys and gone for a trip to the store for some milk or something with him

Nice story but a little odd though - of all the things I miss "the smell" is probably last on the list.

I remember reading in some learned journal, the the memory of smell is the most long-lasting. You remember smells better than sight, sound, or taste.
As to the Porsche smell, with air-cooled engines and leather-surfaced interiors, it is a combination of "smoky leather" and thus would be quite appropriate on my Smoky Quartz Metallic 911SC. Not quite the same as an English Gentlemen's Smoking Room in London, but similar. But Matt, which smell are you referrring to? Like the one on your avatar? LOL!!!!!!!!

My friend, who's family owned a Porsche dealership in San Deigo, came over to check out my 87 when I first got it. He got inside and the first thing he said was "it smells like a Porsche".
So how long did you swap stories with the guy Rick? I would have probably talked to him all night.

Nice story...and yep, the "smell" lingers....even in a 1972 car.

Great story--the smell of my car's interior turns me back into a little kid, when I used to sit in the back seat of my Dad's '79 SC.
I think I may have read a similar article, Andras. Most likely a dumbed-down version for the masses. ![]()
