I picked up some Wolf 40 s&w 180gr FMJ for my Sig 226. $8.99 a box I figured it was worth a try. I have shot Russian ammo through my AK and it was fine....dirty, but no duds of FTFs.
Are the steel cases of these shells bad for my gun? Worries me a bit that they will cause excess wear. The CCI's I bought also appear to be steel case....

The issue is blow back. Brass is soft and while the chamber is under high pressure it locks to the walls of the chamber. Aluminum and steel do not seal as well. They can also scratch the steel breech.
If you have a locked breech design (SIG's are) you may have some blowback and cause you to clean more often. If you have a blowback design pistol, the design relys on the brass expanding and delaying the slide moving rearward. My early colts should never use steel or aluminium case ammo.

Many ranges will not allow steel or aluminum case ammo. Check with your local shootery.

Steel will cause more wear than brass for obvious reasons, but any decent gun should shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds of just about any commercial ammo without wear problems. I dont hate the Wolf 9mm. Its real dirty and it stinks, but its kinda hot and usually cheap. Blazer is usually just as cheap and is much cleaner.
The ranges dont allow steel and AL case ammo because they dont want to sort through the reloadable brass. Steel and aluminum (CCI blazer) case ammo is non reloadable and is usually cheap. The ranges offset a large portion of their costs by selling reloadable brass back to commercial reloaders. Last edited by Shuie; 11-06-2005 at 08:38 PM.. |

I don't think you'll have any problems, just expect your pistol to be very dirty after a couple boxes of it.
I've known people who buy nice Kimber 1911s, and run almost nothing but Wolf through them and have no problems... just dirty guns.

i got your email but my response bounced. I shot about 150 rounds of the Lancer and it was fine. Looks to be good quality, and while I haven't field stripped yet, my bore snake went through pretty easy. That is in contrast to the range reload crap...
