Hmmm..and yet President Bush (Sr) said that he didn't believe that atheists should be considered US citizens. That sounds like discrimination based on creed to me. I guess discimination against atheists *is* politically correct, though.

I'm fully for punishing those who hire undocumented workers, hit the business where it hurts, fine them much more than they would pay a full time documented workers. If they still don't learn, lock em up.

I don't think the guy next door to me is employing any illegal aliens, but I could be wrong.

Man, this thread took a big left turn pretty quick.

I think perhaps the fellow who initiated the thread may have been referring to the Travailles de France.

The Right does not put the President before the country, or they would not have impeached that lying, disbarred misogynist from Arkansas(Ironic he is too crooked to be a member of the Arkansas Bar, but not to be President)

The Left puts their own interests ahead of everything else, so I don't suppose either side can point fingers without reproach.

One of my favorite heroes from our past. The short, ugly, nearsighted, stuttering little bastard never would have made it in politics today. Too bad; we need his kind more than ever today.

If you ever get a chance to read some of his books, do so. I have several he wrote about his hunting exploits that are priceless.

Not many realize he pretty much stocked the Smithstonian's African exhibits with all their flora and fauna. He took his son Kermit on safari, in the grand old style of such, shortly after his presidency. Guided by none other than Frederick Courtney Selous himself; quite a man in his own right. Fought in the British Navy, I believe in WWI when in his sixties. Killed in action. But I digress.

Men like Roosevelt and Selous are still out there. They just don't seem to seek public office anymore. Why has our government reached such a state that these men are no longer attracted to it?

I really like Teddy Roosevelt, but don't kid yourselves that he was popular then within political circles: he wasn't wanted by most of the corrupt party hacks back then either. Kind of the same position John McCain is in now, or Winston Churchill was 75 years ago. No large organization (Democrats, Republicans, General Motors, etc.) wants an orginal thinker, or tolerates them for long. Emerson and Self-Reliance, you know? Those kinds are the type to start a party, a philosophy or a company, but they are not company men.

Teddy Roosevelt was cleaning house in NY, and angering the local hacks, and some in the Republican party thought a good way to get rid of him was to get him to be a VP running mate. That way he'd be out of NY poltics, but without any power. Only an assassin's bullet (McKinley) brought him to power.

There was even a Senator (Hannah, I think) who said of this Republican maneuver "Don’t you realize there is only one heartbeat between that madman and the White House?.”

It is true enough to say that only freak accidents or terrible dangers bring us great leaders (Roosevelt, Lincoln). But hey, that just means that every cloud has a silver lining. Thank God we live in times peaceful enough to endure a Clinton or a Bush, our present wars and threats notwithstanding.
