I hate Capital One!

They keep sending these credit card offers sometimes three or four at a time. I need a new shredder so paperwork is piling up. If I don't shred these offers and some identity thief gets to them, I'm liable correct? How do I get them to stop sending these?

Put a fraud alert on your credit report. You can opt out of these mailings. I did, and it stopped 95% of them.

Send 'em a letter, informing them that properly disposing of their unwanted mail is costing you 30 minutes per week labor. You don't normally contract out, but you figure your time is worth say $200/hr to you. Next time you get mail spam from them, you'll send a bill.

Or you could do what these guys or these other guys did....

No, you would not be liable for anything if someone else accepted a credit offer mailed to you -- which isn't likely to happen. If the letter went back to the issuer and someone wanted to accept the card and have it sent to another address, it won't happen without someone checking into it.

You can probably ask Capital One to remove you from their mailing list, but why bother. Just tear up the offers and be happy you have such good credit that they want to lend you money.

I don't think Cap One is a lender you want to brag about . In fact I think they are "B" paper(low FICO score) lenders. Their best rate is 19% and accounts normally start with a $300.00 high limit. I'd try getting off the mailing list. You have to call them and request your address be removed from their mailer list and that will likely take six months.

I guess I should feel honored? They're giving me 0% until Feb 2007. I still don't want it.

I bought one of these:

15 sheet shredder

Junk mail doesn't stand a chance, and I don't even have to open it. I can feed almost anything in whole, and it becomes instant confetti.

Well. I call BS on that one.
My wife and I have been getting in excess of 100 credit card offers per month. Each.
I've spent at least three days out of every week for the last two years calling credit card companies, asking, pleading, and demanding to be taken off thier mailing lists. 30 to 60 days, they claim.
But, the don't stop. Either people in Inida don't understand "NO MORE MAIL" or they just don't care, but it doesn't work.
I've also called the do-not-solicit number listed on many offers. It's supposed to remove you from the "great list"
Didn't work.
I've called Corporate Headquarters for these companies, issuing banks, you name it. It just doesn't stop.
Same goes for AOL disks. They jam our mailbox and make it impossible for real mail to get through. Big, bulky boxes.

Pay your credit cards off every month and it will almost stop the apps. Since we did, we only get 3 -4 per month. CC companies live for your balance.

I suppose extreme cases do exist, and I'd call yours extreme. Beings as you've tried all the typical methods maybe you should consider billing them in small claims court for the time you've invested in trying to end the onslaught of garbage mail. Maybe try getting the local media interested in your story. A little bad press might get their attention.

Funny how experiences can differ. They have a phone network that is garbage IMHO. You have to enter your cc number just to begin navigating a long list of options then once you get to your desired location some dip **** that can't even pronounce your name asks for your cc number again. I've never called that didn't include being transferred at least twice to another operator, and then have to educate the new person all over again as to why I'm calling in the first place.
I've got three accounts with Cap One and have had them for a least five years. I'm just not thrilled with them.

Both Bush and I agree with you on this.

Not necessarily true. I pay off my CC every month (I only have AMEX and one VISA as backup in case AMEX isn't accepted). I get these 0%, multi-year offers because I'm low risk.

Pack all that paper into the postage prepaid envelope, along with any other junk mail you can stuff in there, and send it back to them.

I actually had a Capital One card for about six months several years ago. I learned that the good credit cards you have to seek out and apply for...the ones you get offers for are all crap.

I remember having some dispute with them which they refused to do anything about...so I cancelled my card.

But if you have great credit, their terms/rates are the best around. 7.9%, no annual fee, true 30 day grace period.

Now that most BREs have bar codes on them with your information, you should be more careful about doing this.

This helps:

http://www.dmaconsumers.org/offmailinglist.html

However, as soon as you re-fi, buy a home and all that you need to do it again. We have done this and have seen a significant drop in junk mail, credit card offers and the like. It's not perfect, but it helps.

I also llike to pack the postage paid envelopes full and send them back

I've had my Cap One card for several years now, 5.9%, no fee, and very good customer service when needed.

So they know who sent them an envelope full of cr@p. So what? If they know who did it maybe they will actually take you off the list. It's not like it's illegal to send them a bunch of cr@p. You're not going to get in any trouble.
