When does the war on terrorism end?

OK - forget the politics - no right, no left, no long cut and pastes, no flaming. :)

When does the war on terrorism end? ie - When the US leaves Iraq, when there are no more terrorists, etc?

Seriously - What will end this unconventional war?

red-beard 11-10-2005 03:05 PM

Iraq is only a part of the puzzle. It is going to be a long long time.

lendaddy 11-10-2005 03:06 PM

For the rest of my life I'm sure.

When does the war on terrorism end?

When the second to the last person on this planet dies. Either that or John Lennons dream of world wide totalitarism occurs.

There is no end. But that isn't because Terrorism is something uniquely dangerous and powerful. It's just that it's another evil we need to defeat.

People have always had to battle other ideologies - anarchists, fascists, communists, now jihadists. Angry young men thousands of years ago would have used WMD's if they'd been available to them. Come to think of it, they did worse than that - read your Ancient history, when all the men of a defeated town or region were killed and the women and children were enslaved. That's why the Etruscan language/society (for which the Tuscany area of Italy is named) is lost to us: beause the Romans were so angry that they wiped the entire civilization away.

I suppose, when the world is big enough and close enough to have a single government, the WAR on terrorism will end. But since human nature will remain unless we curtail freedom and privacy and desire with guns or walls or drugs, the war will just become a police/crime problem.

The battle may have a different name someday. It might leap out from countries or cities that are peaceful today. But it will never go away.

That's no reason to despair though - we've managed to stay ahead of it for all of recorded history.....

The war ends when there is only one terrorist still alive.

Let him pass on the story of what happened to the rest of them.

Heaven is going to run out of virgins any day now. After that, they will have to come up with some other lie.

The war on terrorism has been labelled incorrectly. It should be known as "the schamozzle on terror".

This is obvioulsy not something that can be solved by traditional means and I believe it will take us a long long time to come to this realisation.

The way we fight evil is with lots and lots of guns. A never-ending parade of guns and bombs. Ghandi said it. Jesus said it. We sure can't consider any other alternatives, as they would be too wimpy and not as much fun.

red-beard 11-10-2005 06:39 PM

Oh. I get it. We're supposed to "Turn the the other cheek", right? Or maybe have a sit in, in Tikrit?

"When does the war on terrorism end?"

Excellent question. It will end when human beings on this planet learn to get along.
how profound is that? :)

When the last liberal pulls their head out of their ass and stops supporting the terrorists. Recent events in France and Jordan will be helpful.

You mean calling it a quagmire, attacking the military and the President, and rewarding the Islamofascists with propaganda is not a winning strategy?...It worked for the left in Vietnam.

FrayAdjacent911 11-10-2005 08:38 PM

I think the war on terror is one that has many facets... not just going and killing jihadists, and toppling evil regimes... sure, those are parts of it... but it also comes in winning the minds and hearts of those who would or could be turned against us.

To me the problem is mostly people in poor countries under oppressive regimes have NOTHING, and either they want someone to blame, or someone comes along and promises them 76 virgins in heaven if they blow themselves up. Hey, they don't have much else to lose.

I think this war will go on for a long long time, but if it must, then it must. I do not want my children, or my children's children worrying about if the building they're in will be bombed, or if some asshat is going to strap a bomb to themselves and take out some infidels at the local Starbucks.

One issue I have with the radical conservative side of the Moslems is that the Koran says death to the infidels. Well, the majority of the Moslems say that they are a quiet peaceful religion but if you really look a bit deeper into the Koran it also says "death to the infidels"...

What is an infidel you ask? Anyone who is not a Moslem according to the Koran so the radical faction feel that anyone who has not converted to or anyone who supports a non-Moslem view or side is an infidel and deserves to be killed.

This is going to be a long one unless one major thing happens. If the rank and file Moslem people stand up and say we have had enough and start to work against the radical faction, then we have a chance of eliminating this in the next 5-15 years. Otherwise it very well may go on for a long time.

The vast majority of Moslems (I know quite a few) feel that its possible to co-exist with other religions and this is the only way that both sides will survive. The terrorists have to be made to either go away or "educate" them that if they are going to survive to take the popular view.

Remember that the Crusades took over 200 years before it ground to a halt. Also one point to remember is that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

But Joe, so does the Bible.

Deuteronomy 12
12:29 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;
12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

In other words, kill those of other faiths. Reject their beliefs and do not learn about them.
