Would you ride this x-country?

Talking to my father a couple nights ago about my recent bike purchase and he fills me on on the following. He and a buddy(both 18) drove out to Oregon from Michigan in a 55 Chevy with straight pipes. They sold the car in Oregon and each purchased new Yamaha Big Bear Scrambler to tour the west and drive home. The salesman sold em on it because of its "scarambler ability", which he said was a joke as it was waaaay to heavy They spent a couple weeks camping in Yellow Stone and touring Cali until returning home. This was in the late sixties. He says he'll give me the full story some time soon.

Look at this thing, it's a two stoker twin Maybe I'll pick one up if I can find one for him just for nostalgia?

18? Can you even book into a motel today as a 18 y.o.?

Good to get that stuff out of your system when your young. See all those mid-50s "baby boomers" with the shiny new Harleys?

Sounds like he had the best of both worlds in one trip:

50's Chevy and a little motorcycle touring.

Old japanese bikes in pristine condition are rare and will probably set you back more than you think.

A junker on the other hand, is cheap.

This would probably cost a grand on e-bay. Stick to secondary roads and see the real America:

Good point. I often think I went through my "mid life crisis" at age 25...

Do you hear buzzing sounds in your head?

Surprised he could still have kids after that many miles on that thing!!

Late 60's.....that exhaust pipe may not have been the only thing smoking.
