Pelican OT Call Out - did you survive Black Friday?

Hmmm...did anyone see the news footage of people getting run over as they raced into a Wal Mart at 5AM? The footage I saw came from Detroit. I also saw footage from Orlando where store security/cops did their best "Rodney King" on an irate computer shopper.

Hilarious! Ah, the humanity...

For those who don't know what "Black Friday" means, it's the Friday after T-giving when holiday shoppers begin trampling each other.

I'm about to go to the mall now. I just have to adjust the straps on my body armor.

For those who may not know, the term "Black Friday" is actually a term from the retailer's perspective. Many retail businesses live financially "in the red" all year long until the Christmas shopping season arrives. The day after Thanksgiving is when their books get back "in the black."

And yes, I did see some of the footage of the shoppers trampling each other. I couldn't stop laughing!

After a long day of tiling at the house we hit the stores at 3:00 pm. Boot World, Wal Mart, Kohls, and Costco. Home by 6:20 with a load of stuff including some holiday cheer.

Just cracked a new wine from Costco, Terrazas Reserva Malbec 2003, Argentina, very highly recommend @ ~ $12.00.

I stayed home with my son whilst Mommy and her Mother did the shopping thing. We are done shopping for Christmas so she was just getting some deals on things we need for the new baby while they were on sale. I DO NOT go to any stores on Black Friday. We even stopped having our route persons do the vending service on Friday because of the nuts out there on the roads. IMO< there is no toy worth risking your life for just so kid can be the first to have it. How stupid!
Wait six months for the market to be flooded. Some foks got trampled at a WalMart in Grand Rapids today. People were actually stepping on their heads to get in. What the he!! is wrong with people?
Ok, rant over.

I went to home depot to pick up some electrical stuff, pretty uneventful, then went to harbor freight to get some bungee cords. Or rather, tried to. The checkout line was 3/4 of the way around the perimeter of the store. I decided there was nothing in there that I needed that badly that I was willing to wait an hour for one of the three (count 'em, three) checkout dropouts they had on duty.

The real drama was yet to come. It was raining pretty good, and I'm driving down my street, almost to my house, and some beeotch comes ripping around the corner way too fast for the mix of rain and leaf-strewn streets. She's trying to light a cigarette, and drifts all the way out almost to the sidewalk on my side of the street, sees me at the last minute and swerves back to her side just in time. I would have been creamed right in front of my own house!

So I spent a total of $20 @ home depot, and another $50 for 3 VW pickup loads of gravel for my backyard.

I broke my own rule and spent money in a store today - but only $40 worth of Lubro Moly oil and a Diet Dr Pepper. The damage done was minimal.

Just. . . wow. . .

Got the thoughts derailed there for a second. . .

Anyway yea - I don't set foot anywhere near a retail store or shopping mall from Thanksgiving to Christmas as annual tradition. I do 100% of my shopping either before Thanksgiving or online, or both. Maximum of $25 per person or $400 total, whatever comes first. I also get extremely irritated at anyone that gets me gifts over $25. It ain't what this is about in my book. I ain't making this up either.

Going out and shopping during the holiday season (especially day-after-Thanksgiving) is for idiots and masochists.
