Governor Threw a Curveball on Baseball Career

NEW YORK The draft was controversial in the 1960s, but four decades later it is now proving troublesome for New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. The Albuquerque Journal has determined that the governor has lied about his draft status--baseball draft that is.

Richardson has long maintained he was drafted as a pitcher in 1966 by the Kansas City (now Oakland) Athletics. The media, including The New York Times and Associated Press, have gone along with this.

Richardson alluded to it in a brief biography released when he ran for Congress in 1982, and the Clinton White House mentioned it in a 1997 release when Richardson was about to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

But an Albuquerque Journal probe has found no record of Richardson being drafted by the A's, or any other team. In today's paper tthe governor acknowledged the error.

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter. ... I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's," Richardson said.

He explained that he was, indeed, a star pitcher in high school and played at Tufts University, and was "scouted by several major league teams."

Richardson later developed arm trouble, ending any possible pro career. Before that, he said scouts had told him he "would or could" be drafted. "In my mind, that meant I had been drafted," Richardson said.

Boy, talk about Clinton style thinking! "In my mind I could have been drafted" must make it real! Wonder who is next?

Using that rationale I could be the next lotto winner. Time to go out and buy a new Porsche and hope that the number is the right one on Saturday night!

It's called "moral relativism."

They accept in their minds that there is no right or wrong, it's all just "matters of opinion."

The classic Clinton example: "Well, I guess that would depend on how you define 'is'..."

Guess I am kinda old fashioned. Believe that we have the Ten Commandments for a reason, and they are not to be danced around, especially for a President.

Sadly enough, Richardson is actually a pretty good governor when he stays out of national politics and I would have considered voting for him. It is too bad that they (Democrats) will not just rely on their accomplishments (which are sometimes considerable) to get ahead...they have to make up accomplishments for themselves and make-up/misrepresent gaffs for their opponents.

Just to be clear, the "opposite" of moral relativism does not necessarily have to involve religion. I'm a die-hard atheist, and am philosophically about as far away from moral relativism as one can get.

Agreed and believing in God or not, if one follows the Ten Commandments in life, it helps a bit.

Something about "thou shall not kill, lie, covet thy neighbours wife" and so on makes "what the definition of "is" is" a really stupid statement.

Yes, it was the local liberal newspaper, the Albuquerque Journal. They must have tired of hearing the BS and knowing better. The lie has been used decades...and is even in the liberal bible Wikipedia. I am not suprised that you seem to think the fellow with enough nerve to post the truth is the bad guy....and not the liar.

Jesus, you guys! Couldn't they find some better dirt than this on a potential 2008 Presidential candidate? Like maybe he fathered a black child or something? You know, a major league lie

that is meant to appeal to people's underlying racism, maybe that he is Mexican?

I'll admit that this is little league-sized embarrassment in the form of resume' padding, but the thought of a politician or celebrity BS'ing about some small detail of their life is hardly a shock to me. I wasn't even offended when Bush tried to pretend that he wasn't arrested a couple of times back in the day for driving drunk.

If this is the best smear that they can come up with, he definitely has my vote. You guys are out of your minds if you don't think that most, (if not all), politicians puff up their credentials. Christ, Dumbo once said that he had "been to war". That's like me saying that I was in the NHL because I went to a hockey clinic once.

Of course in the typical liberal fashion....you attempt to change the subject and then misrepresent what the President said. The liberal interviewer that reported the president said he had "been to war" also reported that the President was telling a joke. Conveniently you leave that part out.

Why is lying such a big part of the liberal playbook?

OMG! Some of you guys need to get out, get drunk, get laid or something other than get worked up over such trivia. How you get from a lie told to feel better about oneself to indicting an entire political party is amazing.

Yes lying is wrong but this is ad absurdum. Get over yourselves.

Just look at this BBS and you see liberal misrepresentations...one after another...everything from Bush is back on the bottle, to the one noted above. Intentionally misquoting a person seems to be a common thread in the liberal posts here....much as at the national level.
It only hurts because you know it is true.
