Bullitt

Set your DVR or VCR - Steve McQueen in Bullitt is on Speed tonight at 7:00pm Eastern time. This movie does not compare to LeMans in my opinion but it was the standard to which all chase scenes aspire.

I seem to remember the driving was good but the audio was chopped. He's going 100 mph down a desert road and still grabbing gears like it has a 7 speed or something. Anyway, it is worth watching.

Don

Don is right; still the best chase scene and done without computer-generated graphics, etc.

When the bad guys fasten their seat belts, you know you're in for a ride!

Don't forget the little green VW that is in almost all the high speed scenes, Must be Porsche powered!

I like Bullitt a lot better than Le Mans. I think it showcased Steve McQueen's coolness better than anything else he did. One of my favorite movies, and not just for the chase scene. Well made, with a lot of character depth.

The first season of McQueen's original 1958-61 TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive recently became available on DVD. It's interesting to see him in it, even though it's poorly written and cheesy.

Let us not forget that it also has Jacqueline Bisset - she was SO hot that she STILL Is hot and she must be 60+. Check her out in The Deep with NIck Nolte...you'll see why her nickname was Jacqueline "Big Set". Gawd, she is awesome.

Wow, that is some collection Zoltan. How about "To Live and Die in L.A."? Is the chase good in it? I'm about to watch it again and I can't remember.

One of my neighbors at the marina many years ago was a guy named Bill Hickman. He was the 'bad guy' driving the Charger. Was a 'driving specialist' in Hollywood. A great stuntman until he hurt his back diving out of the third story bedroom window. There was no retirement program for injured stuntmen in those days. He passed away many years ago after a night of doing what he loved best. Playing cards, drinking, and telling stories. He was George C. Scott's driver in Patton as well.

McQueen did all of his own driving, as always. Was already feeling the effects of the cancer growing in him on that set.

Great movie. Great actors. Almost all gone now.

Apparently so. Was winded, constantly tired, had trouble keeping food down.

He was infamous for skipping the insurance required doctor's appointment prior to any shoot. Even after diagnosed, put treatment off until the last moment. Then went the mexican laetrile route.

Makes you suspect he knew early on.

For those w/ INHD, it's been on numerous times w/o commercials and in full widescreen, several times over the last couple of weeks, I've watched it twice,I'll bet it will be aired several more timesin the next couple of weeks.

Z-man,

You should add "The Driver", with Ryan O'neal to your collection. Pretty cheesy 70's movie, but one long car chase after another, and none of those horrible shots where the action is sped up. I think Bullitt has a couple of scenes where the film is sped up, and the cars look weird as they corner and go over bumps.

I can't believe this....You ALL FORGOT another GREAT car chase scene that rivals Buillt.....and that is the chase scene in THE FRENCH CONNECTION...with Gene Hackman...and just guess who the driver was in that one.....the one and only Bill Hickman...not only did he drive but he also played the Federal Agent who Hackman acidentily shoots at the end of the movie....COME ON BOYZ GET A GRIP>>>

Tabby;

I didn't forget that one. I just didn't want to hijack the thread more than I already had. I could do an entire thread on Bill, and just his exploits with the Duke in Avalon and Balboa Bay Club. We also won't go to the poker game on RJ's boat that infamous night in Avalon either. I grew up around that crowd, was really something.

Thanks, as always, for remembering a friend.
