The H3 is a posermobile. But it's based on a Chevy Colorado and has an I5 (DOHC!) engine. If you want to be a poser and get 20 MPG while doing it, I guess it's a great vehicle.

This guy in a Hummer pulls up to the gas pump and starts filling it up. After about 15 minutes the attendent walks by and the driver complains that something is wrong, the pump's not filling up the tank. The attendent says, "Sir, if you turn off the engine it will."

H2's are fairly capable off-road vehicles. Hummer sponsors owner events and off-roading DE. They will go where most other SUV's won't, so the off-road-poseur arguement must also fit 4Runners and Xterras and Grand Cherokees. The H1 (military-only until Arnold got one) is truly unreal in the rough. I agree that most H2's and H3's won't see a dirt road, let alone a challenging trail. The 26 inch rims I see on some Hummers won't even handle a midwest pothole.

My personal experience driving Hummer H2's is that they are about as aerodynamic as they look, they are WAY underpowered, 10mpg freeway qualifies as a 'good job', and they ride very nice. People used to look at them, but that has worn off. Now they're everywhere, as this thread states.

Every contractor has one down here. Its a joke. If you really want to be a baller get a H1. Built like a tank and can go thru a river. Plus Arnold had one, lol.

The ones around here in New York are all blinged out with those 40" chrome wheels and crhome brushguards.

The brush guards are much needed to fend off the shopping carts at the malls.

i disagree. where i get my bread&butter GM truck worked on occasionally is a chevy dealer that sponsers a hummer driving club. i have seen the photos and videos where these husband and wifes do some incredible things. rubicon trail stuff. they get them dented and dirty. sort of like chasing a person in a brand new GT3 at the track. i gotta admire it with a smile. love it!

i'll buy/steal a hummer when the zombies show up.

8500 lbs??? Thats just a little less than my Protege, BMW and Porsche combined. Thats crazy!

The mileage for vehicles over 8500 pounds does not have to be reported. The Excursion and many heavy SUVs are not listed for this reason.

A friend of mine just got a great deal on a newly used Excursion diesel to replace his F150 and reports that mpg are roughly the same but he has way more towing/loading capability with the diesel. I-8 East up and over Alpine towing trailer with astronomy gear and the thing never down shifted once.

Len - what's the story with the 95 RR (rotting in your field)? I still prefer that body style over the 90's update. The new ones are cool too but a bit over my $$ limit. I was eyeing a 95 RR for $5K in our local fish wrap.

Gross vehicle weight rating includes a maximum payload, which is 2200 lbs. The curb weight of an H2 is 6400 lbs (from the Hummer site).

My wife wanted one. But I think a Range Rover has a lot more class- and better off road in some situations. Plus I can get 19mpg on the freeway. The H3 is ugly- but it's all taste. The thing that bothers me is that the folks who drive hummers can't park them!

I agree that they are capable if people would use them as they were ment to be used. The H1 is amazing and the H2 is not bad on the trails.

For all the people here who are bashing them as usless, Have you ever been on a 4x4 trail that requires lockers? We were up on Pikes Peak in my friends heavily modified jeep when a group of Hummer came by. I was very impressed with the stock capability of these vehicles. The come stock with Front and Rear lockers. They have on-board air for lower/raising tire pressure without even getting out of the vehicle. They have good transfer case gearing.

The biggest problem is that people buy them and then don't use them (properly).
