Help with Fountain Pen
Alright time for my weekly I need help from the PP board...
I would like to get a fountain pen for a business contact as a Christmas gift. Under company rules I am not permitted to give him anything that is more than $200 in value. What suggestions do you have for a good quality fountain pen that meets the cost rule (i.e., I want the best I can get him without breaking his company's rules)? Thanks folks.

Costco sells Mont Blanc for anywhere from $99.00 to $169.00. My wife gave me one for Fathers day the year our first child was born.
check out Costco.com: search for Mont Blanc

I don't like my Mont Blac, the plastic sleeve inside the holds the pen closed is supposed to click and hold the pen to the cap. They wear out after a year or so of regular use and cost about $100 to send to get fixed. Nice pen otherwise.

Mont Blanc's are fine until you accidently drop it. Then the plactic either breaks or cracks. I have two and about every 2 years, I have to send it to New York to get cracked parts replaced.
Go with the Waterman...

Montblanc = Yuppie Stick.
Cross make some very nice pens indeed, as do Schaeffer and Waterman. I was particlualry impressed when I returned a Schaeffer Ive had for 20 years and it was repaired for free under warranty. |

I have a Mont Blanc "Meisterstuck" The fat black one with the white splash on the top. Paid well over three bills for it more than a decade ago. I still have it, in it's original case. This after sending it to the NYC company under "warranty", which still cost me more money. They sent it back, the ink flow still stopping after 1/2 sentence or so written. They hinted that the "fault" is my writing style, since I was using their "special" ink that comes in the little boot bottle. Far as I'm concerned, Mont Blanc is for status only. Want a fountain pen that writes well? Look at a Lamy "safari", at 1/10th the price. I'd feel guilty, but if you want to buy an original "meisterstuck" Mont Blanc, still in original case, with original papers? PM me if you're dumb enough to pay $200 for a pen that doesn't work well. Me? I wish I could find my old grade school "Esterbrook"....(edit) On the plus side, this pen experience suggested to me that I should forget all about wanting a Rolex watch. I believe in buying quality...but then, I'm silly enough to believe that "quality" should also function beyond being a status symbol. The watch I wear? Seiko. The pen I carry these days? Fisher "bullet". Both are "cheap", status symbol wise. Both function. Fug status symbol.

Montblanc is no longer special. Make a statement, buy a Pelikan. I love them.

Another option is a ST DuPont. Hand made in France. I normally hate the frogs but these pens are very nice. You can find them new on Ebay, usually out of Hong Kong but they are usually the real McCoy's.
Have used mine everyday for over 10 years and it has not missed a beat. Joe A

Damn! No takers at 200 for the Mont Blanc...into the trash it goes...wise of all not to make an offer. It's only shirt pocket decoration, NOT functional. My bad for spending the money...

Oh and by the way...get the Rolex....Some of the models are not as ostentatious as folks may think. It'll be the last watch you will ever need to purchase.

This is the Pelikan 600. $204. Beautiful pen. Comes in green or blue (maybe more colors).

I've had my Rolex for 22 years and my Mont Blanc for 11 - no problems with either. Pelikan is nice though - for those in the know...

Somewhere in the depths of my storage room I have an old Pelikan drafting set that my father used when he went to architecture school (1963 or thereabouts)...cleaned up they still performed very nicely. I should dig them out some day.
