Where can I download music?

I have been using Kazaa in the past to download music that I wanted, then I uninstalled it once I was done using it. The spyware is just too much of a pain to get off my computer after I uninstalled Kazaa, so I want to know if there is another site I can download music for free without having to give my credit card number (like iTunes has you do)? I want to download some more music, but I don't want to deal with Kazaa spyware agian!
Thanks!

Limewire, or you can use WinMX with the workaround patch that's available. Personally, I prefer WinMX

I have used WinMX and loved it. When they shut it down I found the link to the work around but was worried that this was a trick by Big Brother to see who is out there. Have you used the patch? How much music is out there in the brave new world?
p.s. sorry for the hijack.

Tell me more about the WinMX patch. I've got hundreds of half-finished files waiting for the resurrection of the network...

Here's the link: http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php I installed it and watched it with a network analyser and it didn't seem to be doing anything unusual.

Basically some tech guys figured out a workaround for the problem of the main WinMX site being shut down. Searches are slower and a little more sparse than they used to be, but I was able to complete some files I had started before the shutdown.

Check out the new groups, such as alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.blues or alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs. Might be old school but there is EVERYTHING you can think of in the news groups. Get a "reader" such as NewPro and you can mark and download the attachments, I.E. layla.mp3 from about a dozen artists.

Also check archive.org for lots of stuff (legal too!)

allofmp3.com (i think) is like itunes but in mp3 format, based in Russia, and dirt cheap. itunes of course.

These are all legal. If you are gonna do the p2p thing, only use limewire

By far the biggest and best (legitimate) trading site I have found for live and 'unofficial' music is www.dimeadozen.org

If you want commercial stuff, call me old school but I still prefer to buy cd's and then rip them to the 'puter if I want. Downloading lossy compressed stuff at a buck a song does not turn me on.

My friends- of course not me- have been very pleased with bearshare. Use bearshare pro, the free version has more adware/sypware than you can imagine, and you will never bet it all off your machine. The pro version is not supposed to have any baggage.

There are some other formats that are also useful. Try IRC, for example. It's not anywhere near as easy as the itunes/napster/kazaa format, but it's not that bad, and there's a _lot_ of good stuff on IRC. Search using ircspy.com. Similarly, someone may have what you're looking for as a bit-torrent. Try torrentspy.com for those (or dozens of others -- torrent seems pretty popular).

It's important to remember to only download music and software that you already possess a license for. My lawyer made me put this here.

This might offer a temporary solution.

It's 100 free tunes over 30 days and then you can cancel. It was promoted on the Today Show yesterday. You can also access through www.today.msnbc.com. Boomer Coalition
