Why are some people so against owning a cell phone?

I went to meet a buyer for some car stuff I'm selling through craigslist. The meeting point is at a location between his residence and mine. He had never been there before so he got lost. He doesn't own a cell phone so he had to locate a pay phone to call me for more directions. Turned out he was less than two miles away. I almost went home because he was 25 minutes late.

I don't get why some people are so against owning a cell phone. Turn it on only when you have to, if you think it's such a nuisance.

I hate 'em...and I don't have the "need". But I hate 'em...pleasant dinners interrupted by bozos talking loudly on their cell phones. Cell phones ringing in theaters, then bozo behind you talks OVER the dialog, the list goes on. I hate 'em!
Oh, and then there's the $40 per moon it costs...another good dinner out. Did I mention? I hate 'em?

Yes, they are a nuisance, but I think that on the whole they are actually a great benefit in many ways.

I think it's just a general resistance to change and/or to technology.

What he said.

If I had one, what would I do with it? There isn't anyone that I need to talk to that badly. If you're so insecure that you need to be a ringtone away from mommy, or your wife has you on such a short leash, well, that's your pot and you can stew in it.

None of the conversations that I overhear 1/2 of sound like the OHMYGODINEEDTOTALKTOSOMEONERIGHTNOW kinda stuff that cell phone rationlize.

So, anyone have cell jammer recommendations?

Most all of anyones cell phone woes can be remedied by turning the damn thing OFF.

tho' the thing I hate is the poor fidelity -- one of the reasons people talk so loudly.

From a Peter Egan column a few months back:

We once imagined, Lorenzo added, that the future would bring more speed in all things — cars, airplanes, communications, etc. — but speed is bringing us diminishing returns. "Now there is often a feeling," he said, "that we don't have to do it any faster." Magnusson nodded and said, "The Concorde is gone. We are entering an age of consideration after an age of speed."

Thompson agreed and added, "To live wirelessly is the new luxury; to give up your Blackberry. The new aristocracy won't have to be tied to computers, cellphones and electronic technology. E-tech will become the work of the drone, and to be enslaved by these devices will be the mark of the under classes. Great hotels, such as the Villa d'Este here, will be inhabited by people who don't have to be connected. They will be left alone."

I all but stood up and cheered. As the last journalist on earth without a cellphone, I'd been ridiculed by PR people everywhere for not being reachable every second of my life. Now it turned out I was a member of a new aristocracy, rather than just another Luddite idiot. Thompson was my kind of futurist.

Amen.

What really annoys me the most is guys that walk around with those the ear piece thingys stuck to thier heads. They look like morons.
I will never understand why all of a sudden a man is so obsessed with having to talk on the phone. Why???
It's all part of the feminization of the American male!!!

People playing games in class has to be one of the rudest things I see on a consistant basis. Why do you need to bring your phone to class? You can't talk to anyone during class, leave the damn thing in your room you a$$hat.

I'll agree with what people are saying about being reachable though or being able to reach people, sometimes it can be nice, and sometimes is blows. When it blows shut the stupid thing off.

I've got a very basic older Nokia phone, the sound is good, the reception is good, and when I go someplace that I might bother lots of people I put it into silent mode. I don't use it much (except for work when I'm on call). I just keep it in my pocket.

Cell phones don't have to be annoying, actually these days cell phones aren't annoying, it's the inconsiderate boobs that carry them that are annoying.

I'd like them banned from all moving vehicles driver and all passengers too, with the exceptions only with a special emergency license (or when the car is disasbled (not moving on the side of the road usage may be permitted)

I think the bigger thing is not the having of a cell phone, it's the complete inconsideration many people have.

They think "gee, I have a phone on me now everywhere I go! I can talk while I'm doing *insert anything here* and it's perfectly fine!"

What gets me, is when I enter the residential area where my parents live, and I see a woman who, not 15 seconds prior, had pulled out of her driveway, already yapping on the phone! Geeze, call before you leave! When you're DRIVING, your priority task is DRIVING. (WE know why Porsche doesn't put a cup holder in their cars!)

There's a couple guys at work that are always buzzing around with those stupid earpeices in their ears... They look stupid, and I hate that people can never tell if they're talking to someone present, or someone on the phone.

I keep mine in my pocket. It doesn't get answered when I shouldn't answer, or when it's not appropriate. It gets turned off or put on 'silent' when I go see movies. (I like to say loudly when someone's phone rings in the theatre "Hi, I'm the ******* who DIDN'T turn off my cell phone"... always embarasses the *******, and gets a few laughs.)

Anyway, it's not a neccessity, but it's a great convenience. I use mine so little, but I'm stuck in a contract for almost another year... once that's done, I'm gonna switch to a pre paid plan. That way I won't be blowing money every month when I use all of ~60 of my 1000 minutes.

We can hate them all we like, but they won't go away, and for good reason. Sure, the Hollywood soccer mom-slit-slut whose alimony bought her the Hummer H2, might be pleading for a bit role in Hotel Erotica, while running through a red light as she demonstrates her on-camera panting technique...

...yet at the same time, some poor SOB might be calling 911 on a mountain trail where his dad has just collapsed from a heart attack.

So there are benefits and detriments to the cell phone. I say no housewife and/or mother who also has a driver's license should be allowed one.

And anyway, they cause brain cancer...

I have two and hate the T-mobile and dislike the Cingular, but I need both as I drive from location to location. I don't have the bluetooth head-set nor the wired ear piece. I turn them off/silent for movies and other places where they can annoying. I like being in places where there is no reception for either phone. They do have some strong points tho...

Can you hear me now???

Turned mine off in the theater waiting for some g rated animated flick my kids wanted to see.....when they said to on the screen..."be polite and do it".....thing made a noise louder than my regular ring.

Some Birkenstock wearing long arm pit haired soccer twit gave me the evil eye......had to have one of my daughters tell her I was turning it off and not taking a call from my stockbroker....otherwise I was about to dickslaphearazz.....

I'll lose the phone when I move to Tahiti and the island girls come at my whistle....but I'll be polite in the interim....

I,too need my phone for my job and I use it while driving between accounts. We do not have an office manager to take calls from customers. In fact, at times, the automated service will send calls to our mobile phones. After hours and on the weekends it stays on the counter or IN the car when we go out. I need to be reasonably reachable for problems. I feel like an idiot when it rings ``during t`he `day in a retail location.
edit: Sorry, my 2 yo just pushed the escape key for me. DOH!!

The Israeli's have had one that is very good for a long time. Its used around cafe's and such so that people can have a nice quiet dinner.

Latest group to use them are church's in Mexico. The Priest's got tired of conducting services and being interrupted by the bloody ringing. Now they are buying these puppies and it stops all incoming and outgoing calls for 100 meters (300 feet) around the church.

Am all for it. The guy I am working with now must think he is important as he has a frigging Nokia that beeps loud enough that you can hear it 100 feet away everytime his SMS message is sent or received. Really want to drop it in a glass of Coke (the liquid kind) sometime. The people around us feel the same...

Problem is that the FCC refuses to legalize it for use in America, so its not sold here. Have heard of people having them but if caught its the same as having an illegal radio station and frowned upon. Wish it was legal everywhere...
