Dear Cecil:
They sell chicken, duck, quail, and some other eggs in a lot of stores. Is there a reason I haven't seen turkey eggs being sold? --Player, via the Internet

Dear Player:

Barnyard economics, babe. Turkeys don't lay that many eggs, and the ones they do lay are used to produce more turkeys. The average egg-laying chicken lays 300 or so eggs per year, while the average turkey produces only 100 to 120. Chickens come into production at 19 to 20 weeks of age, but turkeys don't get cranking until 32 weeks. Turkeys are also much larger, averaging 16 to 17 pounds compared to 3.5 pounds for chickens. So you'd need a lot more room for a bird that would take a lot longer to produce a lot fewer eggs.

Another problem is that turkeys go "broody" easily--they want to sit on their eggs and incubate them. In contrast, egg-producing white leghorn chickens have had the broodiness bred out of them. They lay and lay and have no desire to incubate their offspring or otherwise be maternal. You want to play in traffic? Fine! Whatever! Now let me go lay some more eggs. Proof that just because you can make a good breakfast doesn't mean you're a good mom.

Why do you never see baby pigeons?

vash 12-08-2005 07:30 AM

i seen baby pigeons. nasty things.

funny story. a pigeon laid and hatched a solo egg in the back of my coworkers worktruck. he parked it in san fran, and drove to work in oakland. for one week, the mom would wait until the truck came back and then did her thing. the schedule was not favorable, because the baby died. ok, not so funny.

i'll cruise chinatown and find the turkey egg.

I am wearing a t-shirt right now that has a blueberry stain on it.

Yes, but isnt it more of a purple? :)

Cliff,

If you can find a turkey egg in Chinatown, I'll drive up to the city and buy you a beer. I have a chef friend who's been wondering about this a lot. If I could bring him a turkey egg, he'd be ecstatic. Hopefully I can trade the egg for a lobe of fresh foie gras.

Forget turkey eggs. What about balut? If you've never eaten one, you haven't lived!

M.D. Holloway 12-08-2005 08:47 AM

what the hell is that?

RickM 12-08-2005 09:32 AM

I see "hundred year old" Duck eggs at Ssian food stores....scary.

I have two flocks of Turkey wandering through my yard. Should I grab an egg?

vash 12-08-2005 10:45 AM

that hundred year old egg looks worse than it taste. still on the nastier side of a regular egg. but i know folks that gross out on runny egg yolks. so it is all about the prespective. that duck fetus thing i have seen and i just couldnt do it. way past my comfort zone.

oh, the 100 year egg is actually cooked in a batch of herbs and leaves that are heated thru decomposition. i talk a big talk, but i cant really eat them.

Heh heh, don't think that hasn't crossed my mind.

dont be crazy, you dont want to piss off the neighbors. buy a compound bow! let them lead you to the nest first, then raid them for eggs, and then spear the buggers. :D

i keep hoping and praying the peacocks show back up on WESTY's land, then i am gonna robin hood them. bet they taste like pheasant.
