If you use the fire place a bunch I would advise against it. LCD's and plasmas are very supseptable to heat.

I was recently looking a 37" HDTVs, and was getting the impression that in that size and on a budget one would get a better picture with a Plasma. Check out the Panasonics. Check this resource:

Don't want to hijack but my MIL purchased a Maxent 42" Widescreen HD-Ready Plasma from Costco. The set is a monitor (without tuner). Does this mean she has to get a separate cable box to tune regular cable channels? The lady is in her 60's and is technology challenged. Two remotes (one for sound and power, the other for channels) would be very confusing for her so if my fear is correct then I'll take it back and get something with a built in tuner.

David-yes, she'll need a cable box, but almost all of the cable remotes are programable and have sound and power etc on them, so she'll only have one remote. If she wants hd, she gets an hd cable box.

Plasma's seem to generate an awful lot of heat in any case...
