Fire 'Em All
The law is very clear on this.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051220/ap_on_re_us/nyc_transit_strike 3... 2... 1... Cue misguided reinterpretation of the law...

Never-even-mind that it's illegal, what are these spoiled bastards striking over? Retiring at 62 instead of 55? Having to *gasp* contribute towards their own healthcare and retirement? Wage increases that are twice the rate of inflation?
I guess we are going through a period where union workers are gradually and painfully exposed to the financial realities that the rest of America faces. Pity pity. |

Greedy bastards, I agree, fire them all. How much talent does it take to drive a bus or subway train? Welcome to the real world.

Didn't President Reagan fire 11,000 air traffic controllers?
Just figure inflation re: these 33,000 union workers. . Heard this morning that the lowest paid receive $44k - $50k starting pay ($21 - $24/hr.) - w/o overtime. Fire 'em, I say. I don't like the chances of that, however, in this castrated society.

Even as a fellow union worker, I find it hard to have that much sympathy for them. The TWU is looking for a 30% raise over the next three yrs. You gotta be kidding me!! retirement at 55?? **** the rest of us have to wait till 65. By time i get up there it will probably be 75.
Last week, my company took away all pension benefits for its mid to lower level management employees! Guys with 20-30 something yrs, are left holding their d**ks. Meanwhile we just posted our highest grossing quarter ever. Honestly the only thing i do feel bad is the fact that city workers ( firemen, cops) are stiffed by the Taylor Law, which basically takes away any bargaining power. Btw, starting pay for a NYC cop or Fireman is only $26,000.

Forget this bunch of crybabies. Just because the MTA has a $1b surplus doesn't mean you need to get your paws on it. It's a prime example of union corruption. I'll operate a subway train for $20/hour, no questions asked. |

I think they are trying to get the same pension benefits for new hires... as the rest of the workers enjoy now. Bloomberg wants to remove the pension.

But I happen to think it's interesting that the same group calling for "Merry Christmas" firings because the Union broke the law want to give a free pass to Bush, who also broke the law. Why does that bother you? Do you think these lawbreakers should be treated differently than the Bush lawbreakers? |

You guys are brilliant social architects. Great idea. In fact, let's remove the collective bargaining rights of all Americans and get rid of unions completely. Let the employers dictate wages, benefits and working conditions. Think of the societal joy.

Doyou think they'll have trouble finding replacements for these guys with their old contract conditions? Or the 10% pay increase they were offered and denied?

I don't think NY transit workers are Federal... probably state. Maybe there's something in those 700 pages of the Patriot Act... Quote:

Actually the TWU members were trying to get the retirement age reduced to 50 years of age . MTA wanted to increase the retirement age from 55 to 62 years old. TWU workers retire with a pension equal to half their salary.
MTA also wants TWU members to contribute 1% of salaries to cover healthcare bunch of friggin crybabies oh and the union wants "respect"
