You can use "printscreen" to capture the screen image and paste it into an image program. But you'll need to adjust the settings on Windows Media Player first.

On a related matter, any way to edit videos like this? Say if you wanted to stich a couple together?

TIA,

Is there a way to do this screen capture of a Windows Player movie without buying additional software?

Craig,

I just sent you an e-mail.

Windows Movie Maker lets you import video. Once imported, at the bottom right of the video pre-view pane is a button that looks just like a camera.... Takes pics just like this.
