Britain will be first country to monitor every car journey

"Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years."

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/transport/article334686.ece

And some of you think GWB is "Big Brother"... He aint nothin compared with the Labor (socialist) government in the UK...

It's coming here too, don't worry... It's all in the name of fighting terrorism. Fear is the key.

I can almost hear W's speach on the matter "It's about saving lives and fighting the terrorists..."

RickM 12-21-2005 06:16 PM

I assume every car will be fitted with GPS......? Otherwise I cant see how it's possible. (Well, maybe with a more powerful version if RFID)

LOL......I fking told U all ....pay per mile for road usage and pay per mile for car insurance.as well as anti-theft...and guess what I own 5% of a Consulting Co that has a major stake in the LtD that Designs these products in the UK.... U see my cousin is one of the major designers in the field.

A MAJOR European Auto Mfg has allready signed with RDM to put their anti-theft devices in their autos starting in January. They will start showing up in the US when US dealers can provide repair services, somtime late in 2006. This company has dropped LoJac as its ant-theft provider.

I very seriously doubt that. Not in the next three years. W will not be President long enough for something like this to get implemented.

Besides, most all conservatives know that monitoring the public is not a good way to prevent... well... anything, really.

Notice, it's the socialist government in Britain doing it. Leftists are far more socialist than conservatives.

Gotta keep those old cars going...no built-in GPS for me!

I'll tear the stupid system out and put it all in my garage. They can think I never drive anywhere.

RickM 12-21-2005 07:30 PM

Heh heh, I recall an episode of the Supranos where Tony had the OnStar system ripped out of his suburban for this very reason. Maybe he's on to something.

Did anybody bother reading the article in the link I posted...?
There are no electronic monitoring devices (edit: on cars) involved... It's based on CCTV cameras all over the freakin place...

" Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years.

The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts."

I confess I didn't read the article...my bad. But I can't see how cameras (whichs are electronic monitoring devices :) ) can pull this off effectively. The traffic volume, camera angles, weather, distance would be workling against them.

O do know that they have the capabilty to track known soccer "hooligans" from there houses all the way to tthe stadium. Then block them from entrance into the game.

I agree it's not the best design to monitor cars, but I doubt that they'd get away with placing transmitters on cars, and anyway people could just remove or deactivate them. Also, in England, they've been placing cameras everywhere for more than a decade, so they have a jump start on this plan.... they LOVE their surveillance cameras over there...

It looks like they have you, GPS or not. It's a countrywide camera system. I kept reading that article waiting for the punch line. Can this possibly be true?

Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years.

The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts.

By next March a central database installed alongside the Police National Computer in Hendon, north London, will store the details of 35 million number-plate "reads" per day. These will include time, date and precise location, with camera sites monitored by global positioning satellites.

It's pretty scary alright...

GB is a very very small place. Just outfitting the entire LA region would be a relatively massive operation. Same reason mass transit won't ever work here.

RickM 12-21-2005 08:19 PM

Don't they make license plate lens/covers that distort the number from any angle other than straight on? I'm buying stock in that company.

Outfitting GB would be roughly equivalent to outfitting the state of California. I agree, to outfit the entire US would be quite an undertaking, but we're already on that path. The infrastructure just gets built out over time. There already are cameras on freeways all over SoCal.

Rodeo, not pulling your leg but they have been doing this for years in the UK.

London, for example, charges an extra tax for drivers to come in selected areas. If you have not paid the tax the camera sees you, takes a photo and sends you the bill. BTW, license plate covers that distort the plate are illegal there...

Forking 1984 already...
