I think this is a bad idea!

I have been Porscheless for the last year, and recently I have been seeing lots of Z-06 from 05 and 04, show up for sale.

Lots of bang for the buck!

Tell me it is a bad idea, and should keep looking for another Porsche.

Michael

I hear they come with a gold chain, bracelet, nugget ring, and a gallon of old spice.

If you're gonna shell out $50k why not pick up an Elise?

Don't do it! I know the pull from the darkside is strong, but your will must be stronger!

The last year of the C5 Z06 was 2004. There was no Z06 in 2005.

You can buy a 2004 (stickered for $52-54K) with 3-9K miles for $36-38K. 405 horsepower feels good.

my pops loves his 01, and having driven it a few times its alot of bang for the buck. the power it has makes returning to my SC a big let down when you get on the power. still prefer my 911 and the ability to mod, upgrade and work on myself.

i find it funny that some (of us) porsche guys are quick with the "gold chain" stereo-types, when my car brings out all the stereo type calls from friends. you know, small deek and the like. in fact my non p-car friends call me and my pelican buddies the "porsche la-la gang". funny thing is these guys could not even change the oil in their cars, and we are the la-la boys, go figure?

plus, the z06 has no t-tops, and are those not required for open collar, bare chested, chain wearing drives?

can't we all just get along?

my stepdad also has a 01. it is that set of key i grab everytime i visit. the power is intoxicating. i havent done hard twisties or a track, but that car is like on rails. i have accelarated the tire wear more than i should. i got invited to do a track day near there, and instead of trailering my 9, my SD gave me the thumbs up to blow the carbon out of the vette. i love em. and if i had a barnsized garage, like the one in my dreams, i would own one. i am bare chested, for the most part. i wonder what the new car is like.

I would not put the Elise in the same group as the 911 and the Vette, both of which can be daily drivers. I've driven the Elise and put a fair number of miles on one. It is not a daily driver by any stretch of the imagination.

You probably need to get this Corvette ambivalence out of your system. Pick one up. Drive it a few months. Get bored. Sell it. Buy a Porsche.

Actually very well built car with a Toyota engine. I expect it would have a very long life. But this car was really designed to be a track car. Rough ride, uncomfortable seats, and no storage room to speak of. For two people to ride in it on a long trip you better really like each other.

The stereotypes go both ways, of course. But there are Corvette owners, just like Pelican owners, that turn their own wrenches and modify their cars (more than just seat covers and chrome covers) at www.ls1tech.com and www.ls2.com and www.corvetteforum.com . My preference ls1tech. Those guys aren't afraid to tear it down and build it up.

Also, a Z06 is great for track days if bone stock. Another option would be to start with a regular coupe and modify to your taste. It is VERY easy and relatively inexpensive to modify the base LS1 (345-350hp rating) to outgun the Z06's LS6 (385hp in '01's and 405hp '02-04's). My 2001 put 447hp to the rear wheels with head port/polish, streetable cam, long headers, cat-back exhaust, air filter housing, and a good dyno tune (LS1 edit).

Enthusiasts are enthusiasts, regardless of marque.

That's too steep. Two years ago January I walked into a dealer and could have had a brand new 2004 for $40K without even haggling. Awesome car to drive, but the seat was uncomfortable so I passed.

I think you just described every 911 I've ever driven in.

LOL

that is absolutely the very best reason to NOT buy the Vette.

Best advice thus far. I have my biases against GM, but it's hard to go faster for less than a Z06. Of course, $50k will buy a lot of Porsche. Or two or three Porsches.

Like Onewhippedpuppy, I agree as well good advice. You could add a few more cars to that list too if you use your imagination.

I personally dislike Vettes for many many reasons. The biggest is because they lack character and you will see one on every corner. I see a vette and think lemming.

My Dad had a 01 C-5 Vert. He owned it for a couple of years then added a 1993 RX-7 to the stable. As I predicted, one year later the Vette was sold. He has less than 20K invested in the RX-7 and it was daily driven for a year. It is a high 11 second car and handles like a dream. All the reliability mods have been done and it has not given him a problem in the almost 3 years he has owned it. It weighs 2700 lbs and is putting out 350-375HP not a bad investment at all.

I paid 22K for my 911 and it is the best money I have ever spent on a car hands down. Everything has been replaced on it. I daily drive it, its fast as hell, turns heads everywhere I go, and has been VERY reliable. Next month it goes into a local shop for a once over. I decided every January it will go in for maintenance and upgrades.
