Have white people in the US jumped the shark?

Have they (we) become culturally irrelevant?

Do whites in the US even have any culture of their own? You don't exactly see kids at the mall dressed like Jack Welch.

Yes, this is about stereotypes. Quadraphonic stereotypes.

As was stated previously, unless you have lots of cash - and it's externally visible - or some other 'hook,' "normal" white guys don't even get a passing glance anymore. Being confident and funny is one thing, but if you can't even get your foot in the door it doesn't do you any good.

By the same token, white girls don't seem to interest me much. I've been fishing a lot lately, and everything I've been hauling into the boat, I just throw back. They're either lets-go-shopping, cosmo-readin' poor white trash, or let's-go-shopping, cosmo-readin' WASP beeeotches. With nothing else to define them, they load up on piercings and tattoos. There also seems to be a sort of 'entitlement' mentality with white girls.

Disclaimer: yes, I'm sure your wife/gf is the exception, yada yada yada. But I'm not dating her... or am I????

Obsetity seems to be "in" now, too. I need to get a camera phone for no other reason that to take pix of the cows (we're talking north of 200#) chicks wearing "Phat Farm" gear. And am I the only one who sees the irony of a fat chick in a $200 athletic outfit. And love handles are a badge of honour to be displayed, proudly draped down the side of your lo-rise jeans, dontchaknow? I wonder how many belly button rings have disappeard after one too many big macs...

So, back to the original topic: have white people become culturally irrelevant, reduced to parodying everyone else's trends? (ala Eminem)

For white guys, yes. Either you dress normally, or it's wigger style. I know for a fact that I am not black, because I can't dance, dunk, or rap, so I just look like a normal, everyday guy. The only area in which I would say there is any white guy fashion is suits and nicer clothing, because sagging pants and FUBU shirts aren't exactly going to fly in corporate America. The kind of "culture" that seems to be dominant today (Eminem), do you really want any part of that?

As for the women, where the hell are you looking? I don't know your age, race, etc, but I know around here there's lots of girls that are not only attractive, but smart, hardworking, _____ (insert your quality here). Maybe you're looking in the wrong places? I'm married, but know quite a few women with careers and talents, beyond simply deciding what to wear today. Sure, there's still the superficial skanks that were daddy's girl, and think they're God's gift to men with their fake blonde hair and 12 year old boy body, but eventually they get theirs.

no, i think people just dont worry about race and dating anymore. at least not as much. and that doenst make any group, jump the shark. if anything, maybe back in the day, white folks were at the top of the pecking order. now things are just reaching equilibrium.

Well, there is Hollister/Abercrombie prep, at least out east. Upper middle class, suburban, likes (c)rap or alternative. 95% of my school is this type of person.

But yeah, when you have Eminem representing you in one of the more popular forms of music today, things don't look good.

This is going to be a good thread. It isn't just whites you know. A lot of the young Asian kids my son hang out with are Eminem/50Cents lookalikes. I discourage my kid from looking gangsta by shopping with him for his clothes. Most of the time, he looks like he just walked out of a Gap/Abercrombie. I also discourage the gangsta attitude by exposing him to some culture (theater, which he loves, and museums) and sports.

Funny how all the married guys always seem to know lots of quality single women. The problem with the career ladies you describe is they want a guy but don't have time for one. How far can get into a relationship seeing each other once or twice a month?

Yep yep... I'm feelin like a marginalized white guy here. When I was younger (late teens, early 20s), it was already starting to happen. All the white girls didn't want to date us normal, average white guys. On top of that, they rampantly go out and mess up their bodies (peircings and tattoos... 'tramp stamps' [something on the lower back] are way too common). Also many young women feel 'entitled'... an average white guy who has a decent job, a decent car, and dresses nicely just isn't good enough...

Then getting up to my age (almost 30), I see many women around my age are starting to grow up, and say they want a 'nice guy', but still expect that some prince charming is going to come along, sweep them off their feet, and either forgive or completely ignore the girl's young adult mistakes (usually in the form of a kid or two, and/or a 'starter' marriage, and all the body marking and modification)... and they are still drawn to jerks and *********s...

Jumped the shark...? Not yet, but I think they're putting on their skis as we speak.

I am very proud of my small town, southern heritage.
I am proud of my (mostly) conservative values.

I am a member of a college based car club (though I've been out of college for years) and I keep up with their BBS forum. I am very dismayed at their attitudes.

Something that Cliff's comment's made me think of, a big part of it is we are becoming more one culture, instead of many different ones. There's a few dominant styles, but you really can't tie it to just one race or culture. There's preppy white, black, asian, etc kids. Gangster white, black, asian, etc kids. I think that may be part of it, there's less of a distinction between the races nowadays, which I see as a good thing.

As for the women thing, I disagree on the career issue. You just have to find somebody that is looking for a relationship, and is willing to make the time for one. It seems like as women get older and more mature they realize that the jackasses aren't going to change, and that happiness isn't dating an Abercrombie model. Maybe in some parts of the country that maturity takes longer, in Kansas marriage and family is still a pretty big deal, so by 23-25 or so they start looking for somebody to make a life with, as opposed to impressing their friends and partying. Maybe some of you guys need to make a little recruiting trip to the center of the country?

I never thought of US Americans really having any specific culture. The USA culture is about corporate business. When I think of cultures around the world and I think of traditions rooted in religious beliefs, historical events, the arts, and family values. The courts and legislatures of the USA have pretty much taken each of these aspects out of society in the USA. You can't say "Merry Christmas" without offending someone, you can't Pledge Allegance to the Flag, and god forbid you hold anyone to the level of acheiving anything in the fear of having them fail (it would ruin their self esteem.) What we have left is a society filed with influences based upon fads and the almighty dollar. Not much of a culture. You want culture in the USA go to dinner at a Mexican, Greek or Italian restraunt for the evening. Then go home and turn on your TV and grab a bag a Doritos and a Diet Coke to stuff your face as you are wow'ed by the artifical people in artifical worlds.

Not to slam CA, but I think part of the hard time you are having is due to your location. From what I can tell, California girls, while on average better looking than in many other parts of the continent, also bear a lot more of the negative personality traits... sense of entitlement, propensity to get sucked into the latest fad, generally more "shallow" (for lack of a better description). I think the problem is that you're too hung up on this relationship thing. Just get out there and poke some hot chicks ;-).

If they want to act like every other girl, treat 'em like they're any other girl!

Matt, maybe I'll have to go up there and find me a good midwestern woman. Down here in my area, they're pretty snobby and very picky.

I do know one girl that lives in Houston, sweet as can be, attractive and very cool, but she's just way too busy with her job, and doesn't communicate very often.

It is liberal diversity, the celebration of anything but America by the media and Democrats, that is keeping the melting pot from melting and thus making a truly American stew. If new ingredients are being added by the million it is hard for the culture to diffuse...Our diversity is the reason we don't have a firm American culture...This is why we must close the borders for a good 100 years and let the stew settle...Then we will have some culture and the perspective to realize that we are overpopulating without massive influx of Mexicans and other third-world nationals.
