Britain will be first country to monitor every car journey
"Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years."

It's coming here too, don't worry... It's all in the name of fighting terrorism. Fear is the key.
I can almost hear W's speach on the matter "It's about saving lives and fighting the terrorists..." |

I assume every car will be fitted with GPS......? Otherwise I cant see how it's possible. (Well, maybe with a more powerful version if RFID)

LOL......I fking told U all ....pay per mile for road usage and pay per mile for car insurance.as well as anti-theft...and guess what I own 5% of a Consulting Co that has a major stake in the LtD that Designs these products in the UK.... U see my cousin is one of the major designers in the field.
A MAJOR European Auto Mfg has allready signed with RDM to put their anti-theft devices in their autos starting in January. They will start showing up in the US when US dealers can provide repair services, somtime late in 2006. This company has dropped LoJac as its ant-theft provider.

Besides, most all conservatives know that monitoring the public is not a good way to prevent... well... anything, really. Notice, it's the socialist government in Britain doing it. Leftists are far more socialist than conservatives.

Gotta keep those old cars going...no built-in GPS for me!
I'll tear the stupid system out and put it all in my garage. They can think I never drive anywhere. Last edited by yellowline; 12-21-2005 at 06:09 PM.. |

Heh heh, I recall an episode of the Supranos where Tony had the OnStar system ripped out of his suburban for this very reason. Maybe he's on to something.

Did anybody bother reading the article in the link I posted...?
There are no electronic monitoring devices (edit: on cars) involved... It's based on CCTV cameras all over the freakin place... " Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years. The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts."

It looks like they have you, GPS or not. It's a countrywide camera system. I kept reading that article waiting for the punch line. Can this possibly be true?
Using a network of cameras that can automatically read every passing number plate, the plan is to build a huge database of vehicle movements so that the police and security services can analyse any journey a driver has made over several years. The network will incorporate thousands of existing CCTV cameras which are being converted to read number plates automatically night and day to provide 24/7 coverage of all motorways and main roads, as well as towns, cities, ports and petrol-station forecourts. By next March a central database installed alongside the Police National Computer in Hendon, north London, will store the details of 35 million number-plate "reads" per day. These will include time, date and precise location, with camera sites monitored by global positioning satellites. |

GB is a very very small place. Just outfitting the entire LA region would be a relatively massive operation. Same reason mass transit won't ever work here.

Don't they make license plate lens/covers that distort the number from any angle other than straight on? I'm buying stock in that company.

London, for example, charges an extra tax for drivers to come in selected areas. If you have not paid the tax the camera sees you, takes a photo and sends you the bill. BTW, license plate covers that distort the plate are illegal there... Forking 1984 already... JoeA http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB112077340647880052-cKyZgAb0T3asU4UDFVNPWrOAqCY_20060708.html
