The Fast and The Furious -- got your tickets yet?

It HAD to be posted. You know it.
Now you all know me, I'm a car guy and there ain't that many car movies commin' down the pike these days, so I'm there.
Livin' in the midwest I have no idea what this ricer "Import Craze" is all about, so I'm gonna see first hand. Besides, I figure there's GOT to be a 911 in there somewhere!

juan ruiz 06-17-2001 05:06 PM

Not in defense of the rice boys, but i was told that the movie is a gang type of movie, regarding the ticket yesterday we were lucky not to get boosted the in the M3 that i was co-pilot we were doing 169 MPH and the latest Honda that we built reached 157MPH few more bugs to work out,oh yes this will spice this place up.

I dunno, Driven was not realistic, and gone in 60 seconds was crap also...

Fast and the furious doesn't even have a concept like high dollar cars, or racing in the top level, instead (poorly) modified, mostly import cars, that are illegally driven on public roads. Maybe if I lived in england it'd be a bit more interesting http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

I'm there also.

Those cars look pretty nice (for ricers http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif )

I gotta try any car movie... still waiting to get my hands on a copy of Lemans...

As a side note, I liked driven and gone in 60 seconds.

I may go see it just to catch the computer animation where you get sucked in the intake and spit out the exhaust http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif I'm such a geek...

I want to see it!!! I just like car movies.

I thought Gone In 60 Seconds was pretty cool too... Definately low on plot and realistic stunts though.

The Fam went to see Two Lane Blacktop from 1971 at the local drive-in last night and that movie sucked. Granted the drive-in was cool http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif Lots of hot rodders and various classics.

Of course I haven't seen it yet, so I might be making a hasty generalization.

How the hell can these street punks afford to make these rides as fast and flashy as they appear in the previews? Do they all work at the local body or machine shop? Gimme a break. This has to be the most blatant encouragement of illegal street racing yet. I like to stomp on the gas as much as the next guy, but this movie looks like just plain 'ol crap.

I knew Driven was crap when:

1. The previews show the open-wheelers driving thru the city at night. Please.

2. The HBO special edition segment shows a clip of Sly (Joe Tanto? That's gay.) and some of the other racers helping a dude out of his car that went off the track and into a nearby pond- during the race! That dude would have drowned before anybody even got their safety belts off.

Today's car movies lick. Days of Thunder was the last one I liked. "He didn't hit you, he didn't smash you, he didn't bump you..... he rubbed you. And rubbin' is racin'." Cole Trickle, now that's a name!! Yeeeeee haw!

Poorly modified!? Ahmet lay off the pipe man... The cars in that movie for the most part are extremely fast. From people on other bbs that have already seen the movie, practically every car is turboed. I guarantee the Supra in that movie runs in the 11s in the 1/4 miles. They may be rice, but they are still damn fast cars.

I would say this movie is a rental, kindda like Gone in 60 Seconds. My fav part in the preview is when they try to make you believe a CIVIC can go UNDER a semi....Puh-leese! My lowered 914 wouldn't even come close...not like I'd ever try. I'm sure my ricer friends will go see it though, haha.

By stealing parts off of our porsche's

I dunno man, I think McDonalds is paying pretty good these days...

Rufblackbird 06-18-2001 02:41 PM

Yup...gonna go see it on opening day. Doesn't seem too bad of a movie, and I do admit although they are ricers there are a *few* that *look* nice. (Disclaimer: I'm still quite young and stupid)

Just for the record, I LOVED Gone in 60 Seconds. I'll take Angelina Jolie and a couple of fast cars together anyday...then again I'd take Angelina in ANY car anyday. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

rcwaldo 06-18-2001 03:53 PM

As far as "Driven" and other racing movies go, Hollywood HAS to make them far from real, just to attract the average movie goer.
I worked on the Panasonic Swift champ car last season and I am even seen in the movie Driven. They filmed all over the place last season.

Anyhow, I literally laughed out loud while watching Driven. Only because of how rediculous the crash's were, and unrealistic the racing was. I guess that is what attract's people to go see these type of films. Just my opinion.....

Juan, I was about to say something similar. One thing you've got to realise is these cars are newer and less exotic than ours. I read European Car, Sports Compact Car, and the like and I'm blown away at the prices in the ads. A kid living at home with a McJob and a decent set of tools can create a speed-demon over the course of a year, I'd bet.

Speaking of magazines, this month's issue of Porsche and 911 World is pretty cool. Kurt may want to check out the article on engine drops :-)

Emanuel:

...a McJOB???????? Oh my Gosh! I fell on the floor laughing when I read that one!

I'll probably rent this movie when it makes it to video, but I'm expecting to find it in the comedy section.

Kevin:

I think you're right. The street racing gig is going to be made even more popular after these wanna-be's see this thing. I just pray that none of these bastards run a red light while me or my wife is passing through an intersection. I may have to start driving a tank.

McJob - that's funny as hell!

I've not seen a trailer for this movie yet, read about it in Autoweek Mag. They say this show's characters are based on three big hitters in the "Import Scene". They are Stephan Papadakis, Shaun Carison, and Rob Miller. All of these guys are in their 20's. Papadakis is the leader in the front driver wars posting a best 8.49 sec in the 1/4 out of his Honda Civic. That is NOT a typo. Very serious *****. One of their cars is for sale - how's 80 grand grab ya?

As for the money - there are a lot of rich stupid parents out there. A few years back I met a guy who drove a 930 Cab in HIGHSCHOOL. It was just a cool car to him. No blood, no sweat, no sacrifices, no respect.

Pillow 06-18-2001 08:43 PM

Speaking of ignorant youth.

Tonight while adjusting the valves on the SC the punk ass kid the neighbor high school girl is dating was outside and goofing around on a skateboard... He drives this super riced up Civic with wing, ground effects, and grapefruit shooter tail pipe. I tell him that there is a SCCA Solo 1 race this weekend and I was wondering if he was racing in it... I figured if you spend that kind of money on a car he must use it?... His reply was that he already had enough tickets and could not afford anymore... WTF!!! I had to explain what the heck the SCCA was and what Solo 1 was about. He's like "is that legal?" Idiot!

But he knew this movie was coming out this weekend! I bet his mother is soooo proud.

Just goes to show $10,000 of fiberglass and speakers does not mean they have a clue as to how to use it... Kind of like the Ferrari owners who I hear about missing gears all the time http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

End of rant.

I'm still gonna check it out. Seeing a good car movie is a crapshoot anyway.
My prediction is that this show will fire up the ricer crowd even more, and you'll start seeing engines scatter as never before when turbos are bolted on by the naive and mechanically challenged.
