The Fast and The Furious -- got your tickets yet?
It HAD to be posted. You know it.
Now you all know me, I'm a car guy and there ain't that many car movies commin' down the pike these days, so I'm there. Livin' in the midwest I have no idea what this ricer "Import Craze" is all about, so I'm gonna see first hand. Besides, I figure there's GOT to be a 911 in there somewhere! |
Not in defense of the rice boys, but i was told that the movie is a gang type of movie, regarding the ticket yesterday we were lucky not to get boosted the in the M3 that i was co-pilot we were doing 169 MPH and the latest Honda that we built reached 157MPH few more bugs to work out,oh yes this will spice this place up.
|
I dunno, Driven was not realistic, and gone in 60 seconds was crap also...
Fast and the furious doesn't even have a concept like high dollar cars, or racing in the top level, instead (poorly) modified, mostly import cars, that are illegally driven on public roads. Maybe if I lived in england it'd be a bit more interesting http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... I will be there ...I love the wheel standing Mopar in the trailer as it lifts and hopps forward!!!

I'm there also.
Those cars look pretty nice (for ricers http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif ) I gotta try any car movie... still waiting to get my hands on a copy of Lemans... As a side note, I liked driven and gone in 60 seconds. Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |
I may go see it just to catch the computer animation where you get sucked in the intake and spit out the exhaust http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif I'm such a geek...
Brad |
I want to see it!!! I just like car movies.
I thought Gone In 60 Seconds was pretty cool too... Definately low on plot and realistic stunts though. The Fam went to see Two Lane Blacktop from 1971 at the local drive-in last night and that movie sucked. Granted the drive-in was cool http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif Lots of hot rodders and various classics. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |
Of course I haven't seen it yet, so I might be making a hasty generalization.
How the hell can these street punks afford to make these rides as fast and flashy as they appear in the previews? Do they all work at the local body or machine shop? Gimme a break. This has to be the most blatant encouragement of illegal street racing yet. I like to stomp on the gas as much as the next guy, but this movie looks like just plain 'ol crap. I knew Driven was crap when: 1. The previews show the open-wheelers driving thru the city at night. Please. 2. The HBO special edition segment shows a clip of Sly (Joe Tanto? That's gay.) and some of the other racers helping a dude out of his car that went off the track and into a nearby pond- during the race! That dude would have drowned before anybody even got their safety belts off. Today's car movies lick. Days of Thunder was the last one I liked. "He didn't hit you, he didn't smash you, he didn't bump you..... he rubbed you. And rubbin' is racin'." Cole Trickle, now that's a name!! Yeeeeee haw! ------------------ Kevin 87 Carrera coupe |

I would say this movie is a rental, kindda like Gone in 60 Seconds. My fav part in the preview is when they try to make you believe a CIVIC can go UNDER a semi....Puh-leese! My lowered 914 wouldn't even come close...not like I'd ever try. I'm sure my ricer friends will go see it though, haha.

I dunno man, I think McDonalds is paying pretty good these days...
|
Yup...gonna go see it on opening day. Doesn't seem too bad of a movie, and I do admit although they are ricers there are a *few* that *look* nice. (Disclaimer: I'm still quite young and stupid)
Just for the record, I LOVED Gone in 60 Seconds. I'll take Angelina Jolie and a couple of fast cars together anyday...then again I'd take Angelina in ANY car anyday. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |
To all of you that ask how can this rice boys affort this toys, here goes
Complete block VTech pistons heads ect $500 Complete exhaust system $600 Complete turbo kit $2500 The mother of the intercoolers $300 and the list goes on and on ,the latest one that we built all for under $7,000 400+HP not to bad.I which i could do that with my 88 carrera, no even in the dreams. |
As far as "Driven" and other racing movies go, Hollywood HAS to make them far from real, just to attract the average movie goer.
I worked on the Panasonic Swift champ car last season and I am even seen in the movie Driven. They filmed all over the place last season. Anyhow, I literally laughed out loud while watching Driven. Only because of how rediculous the crash's were, and unrealistic the racing was. I guess that is what attract's people to go see these type of films. Just my opinion..... chris |
Juan, I was about to say something similar. One thing you've got to realise is these cars are newer and less exotic than ours. I read European Car, Sports Compact Car, and the like and I'm blown away at the prices in the ads. A kid living at home with a McJob and a decent set of tools can create a speed-demon over the course of a year, I'd bet.
Speaking of magazines, this month's issue of Porsche and 911 World is pretty cool. Kurt may want to check out the article on engine drops :-) Emanuel |
Emanuel:
...a McJOB???????? Oh my Gosh! I fell on the floor laughing when I read that one! I'll probably rent this movie when it makes it to video, but I'm expecting to find it in the comedy section. Kevin: I think you're right. The street racing gig is going to be made even more popular after these wanna-be's see this thing. I just pray that none of these bastards run a red light while me or my wife is passing through an intersection. I may have to start driving a tank. ------------------ Adam Nitti ajnitti@mindspring.com www.adamnitti.com '85 911 Carrera Coupe PCA member, Peachstate region |
McJob - that's funny as hell!
I've not seen a trailer for this movie yet, read about it in Autoweek Mag. They say this show's characters are based on three big hitters in the "Import Scene". They are Stephan Papadakis, Shaun Carison, and Rob Miller. All of these guys are in their 20's. Papadakis is the leader in the front driver wars posting a best 8.49 sec in the 1/4 out of his Honda Civic. That is NOT a typo. Very serious *****. One of their cars is for sale - how's 80 grand grab ya? As for the money - there are a lot of rich stupid parents out there. A few years back I met a guy who drove a 930 Cab in HIGHSCHOOL. It was just a cool car to him. No blood, no sweat, no sacrifices, no respect. |
Speaking of ignorant youth.
Tonight while adjusting the valves on the SC the punk ass kid the neighbor high school girl is dating was outside and goofing around on a skateboard... He drives this super riced up Civic with wing, ground effects, and grapefruit shooter tail pipe. I tell him that there is a SCCA Solo 1 race this weekend and I was wondering if he was racing in it... I figured if you spend that kind of money on a car he must use it?... His reply was that he already had enough tickets and could not afford anymore... WTF!!! I had to explain what the heck the SCCA was and what Solo 1 was about. He's like "is that legal?" Idiot! But he knew this movie was coming out this weekend! I bet his mother is soooo proud. Just goes to show $10,000 of fiberglass and speakers does not mean they have a clue as to how to use it... Kind of like the Ferrari owners who I hear about missing gears all the time http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif End of rant. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |
I'm still gonna check it out. Seeing a good car movie is a crapshoot anyway.
My prediction is that this show will fire up the ricer crowd even more, and you'll start seeing engines scatter as never before when turbos are bolted on by the naive and mechanically challenged. |
Just got back from seeing it ..... It was not bad and had some nice cars too. Overall "good" if you don't see it in the theater it should be a Definate rental.
|
I dunno, but I'm guessing the ones concerned about how this movie will "encourage the youth," are the same ones who though their parents were complete geeks for being concerned when American Graffiti came out.
. . .or how about Gumball Rally, or. . . Same movie shiet, different day. ------------------ '81 Platinum Metalic SC Coupe |
Funny...I just turned on the local TV evening news. The reporters are talking to the police getting their slant on the movie, which starts here today. Well kiddies, the cops are freaking out!
They are predicting a summer of carnage! I'm predicting a summer of Radar Traps! ------------------ '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA The Blue Bomber's Website [This message has been edited by Doug Zielke (edited 06-22-2001).] |
You know what's funny is that the guys with rice racers in SCCA are a lot more subdued than their flashy brethren. They don't run huge wings or silly taillights for the most part - it's all big ass wheels, beefed up suspensions, and motor mods. Kinda like a certain German make of car that runs alongside them.

The chase scene in "Ronin". Classic.
|
Ronin is one of my favourite movies; that Audi S8 is so cool, and the chase scenes are actually fairly realistic unlike most hollywood car based drivel.
I love to turn up the volume on my amp and watch that scene, hear that Audi 4.2 V8 roar! ------------------ Phil Garner '72 911E Sporto '87 VW Golf CL 1.6 with Weber (x1!) |
Went to the theater last night. All showings of "The Fast and the Furious" were sold out. As I imagined, cars were rolling up in front and revving their engines to show off the resonance of their sport exhausts. Funny thing is, most of them were Mustangs.
My wife and I ended up seeing Moulan Rouge. No cars in it, but pretty entertaining, nonetheless. ------------------ Adam Nitti ajnitti@mindspring.com www.adamnitti.com '85 911 Carrera Coupe PCA member, Peachstate region |

I'll admit that I'm probably going to see it this week. From what friends have told me, it's not an Oscar contender or anything, but it's entertaining if you're into cars. And I liked Vin Deisel in Pitch Black.
A bunch of people in my local PCA chapter were planning to meet at a specific theater in the Chicago area on opening night. I should've checked it out then. I'm sorry, but I just don't 'get' drag racing?.
Maybe it's an american hot rod/dragstrip type thing that Europeaners are just not brought up with!. Surely the only skill is how well you can 'slip' or 'drop' the clutch and how swift you can change the gears!. The other skill is how much money you can pour into gizmos and engine rebuilds!. It's kinda similar to Nascar and oval track racing- limited!. Racing around corners (not just left!) braking changing up and down gears, chosing the best line thru multiple bends must involve more skill and a feeling of accomplishment?. Or maybe i'm just a 'wingeing pomme' or maybe I'm just getting old!. Why don't these guys prove their coolness and skill on the track or auto x. Last auto x I was at some kids turned up in a Nissan skyline (right hand drive) which I thought was sure to enter!. But no, the guys just stood around trying to look cool and criticised the other entrees!. We have all been guilty of driving over the limit on occaision but I feel that this 'Cult' or 'Fad' will claim a few kids lives and possible innocent bystanders before another craze takes over! (Bring back the hoola hoop! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif) Rant over! |
Just saw it last night. Not great, but one of the better car movies of late. Some character made mention that one of the cars was worth $80k. WTF?! And what kind of resale do these kids get?

I am there too!!! I will take any movie with fast cars. Sure we all know its crap before we even hit our seats but keep on smashn'and crashn' Hollywood! There are alot of classics if you want to rent them:
Bullit is a got to see! No mans land great movie and dedicated to steeling porsche's the french conection, Ronin made me want an audi. If you haven't seen these check them out! sean ------------------ going.....going...gone |
I saw the movie last night. I have to say, I enjoyed it. Don't go into the movie expecting to see something with a lot of plot though. I love car movies, and this movie had a lot of chase scenes and some awesome stunts. The black Dodge charger was a welcome sight in a movie chock full of rice rockets with fart exhausts(some of them nice though). There was a Ferrari that got wasted by the modded Supra...pretty neat. More believable than the race between the Civic and the Carerra in Gone in 60 Seconds. I have liked Vin Diesel since he made an appearance in Pitch Black. The movie had a few stupid scenes, but I didn't mind it too bad. Would I recommend it? Not to most of the intellectuals on this board, but I would to anyone under 20 years old. Just my $7 cost of admission opinion... Bill ------------------ William Armentrout 1973 911T 2.7 carerra rs specs www.geocities.com/william_armentrout |
Basically, the movie was Point Break for drag racers instead of surfers. I was a little blown away by the price of the cars as well. I mean, I thought the idea of souping up a Honda was you couldn't afford something faster out of the box. These guys were blowing 20 grand on a Honda or Integra and another 10 grand on upgrades to get a "10 second car". Not only is that a monster of a 914-6 or a decent late-80s Carrera, but you could build a hell of a drag racer for half that using old Camaros, Mustangs, and Chargers. The chief benefit of import cars is the improved handling over those old cars, but their main activity was straight-line quarter miles - the one thing Detroit rolling iron is actually good at!
Emanuel |
I had a buddy blow more than 10 grand on a dodge neon to get a 13 sec car. stupid stupid stupid...
