I am watching a HD special Fender 50 yrs of the Stratocaster.
But, I don't know who these two guys are:

The singer looks kind of like Paul Rodgers. Don't recognize the guitarist.

Google turned up this site with some good pics....

My Tivo recorded the Strat Pack on HDnet, but for some reason it had the time wrong and stopped recording during David Gilmour. I was p*ssed.

Naahhhh, it's Gary Moore, of Thin Lizzy fame. and yes, he is quite the unsung hero of the guitar.

Thats Brian May from Queen with Rodgers. Paul Rodgers has been touring with Queen recently. (hmmm)

Gary Moore. One of my all time faves. Let down nicely, hasnt he....Still got the blues (and the chops) tho. Wagged school to see him play with Lizzy in 1978 (he and I go way back...)

Stuart!!!

What's this? Common ground? Who'da thunk it?

My favorite cd by Gary Moore has to be Blues For Greeny. And "Still Got The Blues"...man, he sure makes that guitar cry, doesn't he?

And Brian May...another great one. Heard a story about him several years ago. Apparently, his father is some kind of construction worker and several years back, he was doing a demo or reconstruction on a house in England that was a few hundred years old. The story has it where Brian's father saved some of the wood from the mantle of this house which in turn was used by Brian to make a guitar...perhaps a few of them even.

So, several hundred year-old wood for the body, and then he uses some sort of British coin for a pick. Put them both together for quite a unique sound, dontcha know!

Randy

edit: A quick Google search provided the following...

May has played a range of guitars, most often the Red Special, which he designed with his father, Harold May, and built with wood from a most unlikely source — an 18th century fireplace. His comments on this instrument, from Queen In Their Own Words (ed. Mick St. Michael, Omnibus Press, 1992, p62) are:

"I like a big neck - thick, flat and wide. I lacquered the fingerboard with Rustin's Plastic Coating. The tremolo is interesting in that the arm's made from an old bicycle saddle bag carrier, the knob at the end's off a knitting needle and the springs are valve springs from an old motorbike."
In addition to using his homemade guitar, he prefers to use coins (especially sixpenny pieces) instead of a more traditional plastic plectrum, on the basis that their rigidity gives him more control in playing. He is known to constantly carry coins in his pockets specifically for this purpose.

It had to happen Randy. I have a 964 too.....Is there decent Porsche board around?

Gary is no ordianry blues hard rocker. Wonderful vibrato, amazingly fluid and technically accomplished. I dont know the "Blues for Greeny" album, but I thank you and I will get it. Makes me cry that people only think of Fleetwood Mac as that that horrid California iteration, post Peter Green. Stevie Nicks invokes an involuntary gag reflex...

Thin Lizzy in 1978, after all these years stands out in my mind as the best rock show Ive ever seen...I think Gary was ripped out of his brain and played the entire show with fly down. In my own inadequate way Ive attempted to replcate Moore's classic Les Paul and Marshall sound and fab technique (sans wardrobe problems)..its a journey. Off to pop "Parisenne Walkways" on the CD player.

Regards Stuart

Brian May is one of the greats - one the guys who you instantly recognize when you hear his guitar. Guild made a very limited run of copies of his guitar. I got to play one in a music store in Cologne once. It will someday be mine. Unfortunately, Queen's latest US tour didn't come any closer to my area than East Rutherford, NJ. I would kill to see Brian May live. I have his Starfleet EP where he jammed with Eddie Van Halen. It's amazing. Can't think of a better stand-in than Paul Rogers. Freddie was irreplaceable, but Paul is great too. Looks like Gary Moore has more chins now than a Chinese phone book.

Thats the very Brian May axe in the pic ( or a replica- tehres a commercial one available now and I wold imagine the original doesnt go far form home) and it was more than a FEW years ago- he's been palying that thing since Queen started in the early 70's. The other unique thing about May's sound (apart form all the ground breaking double/triple and quad tracking in the studio) is the pile of old Vox AC30 amps he uses.

I reckon a mark of a great is that when you hear two notes you know who it is staright away...Thats certainly so for May, Knopfler, Page, Gilmour, 'endrix, Tufnell....

Stuart,

A little more on Gary Moore's "Blues For Greeny". This is from the liner notes, written by Gary Moore:

One night, at London's Marquee club, he (Peter Green) asked me if I wanted too borrow his guitar. All through the Blues Breakers and Fleetwood mac he had played this particular guitar - a 1959 Gibson Les Paul and so I jumped at the chance. A few days later, he called me up and asked me what I thought of it. I told him that Ii loved it and he asked me if I wanted it. I told him there was no way I could afford it, but he said if I sold my main guitar (a Gibson SG) then whatever I got for it, I could give to him and then it would be like swapping guitars. It's the best guitar I've ever played and I've used it all the way through this album. It has a magic all it's own and a sound that I've never heard from any other guitar.

I love these tidbits of history!!!

Randy
