I have a buddy from Texas whose Dad is a rancher, the old man always said that there are two things that you don't want to scrimp on: boots and a mattress. Because you are always in one or the other. ;)

Is a box spring necessary?

My bride is sensitive to back pain when sleeping. She also sleeps without moving all night.

She tried a mattress that has those thick pads on both sides at the store. Bingo immediately in the back dept. And the pads also allow me to move around without vibrating the bed. It was around $3k.

Most mattresses are made by only 3 mfg and then titled by the big names.

No, actually the airbed mfgs recommend a "foundation" instead of a box spring. The foundation is just a wood framed box with fabric stretched over it to look like the mattress and it serves to raise the mattres to the proper height from the floor. We used two twin foundations, then put a king-size air mattress (Comfortaire Cerulean) on top and we've been very happy with it.

Box springs wear out eventually and a foundation doesn't have any springs to flatten...

I bought a Sealy because I couldn't afford the Sterns & Foster (same company/ factory, just higher line like Toyota VS Lexus). 11 years later (now) I'm looking at a foam mattress. There are some out there that have a 20 year warrenty.

One of the stores I helped build (Jordan's Furniture in Reading MA) has a secret room just for high end buyers, The mattress' there are supposed to be the best but at $10k+?

Yep, we got one too. I've had trouble sleeping and getting comfortable my entire life. I slept like a rock for six months and then started having problems again.
Not that it's uncomfortable mind you, because it's very comfortable. I just got used to it I guess.
The nice thing is there will be no springs. Ever. Period.

I find that if Mr. Snakey is satisfied I can sleep on cold broken rocks, so the best bed is a well used one.

Actually my buddy is a Simmons rep so I have their top 'O the line model and it is very nice. I seriously do get to sleep an hour or so quicker and would buy another.

My mom and Rush Limbaugh swear by the SelectComfort.

My favorite was a Spring Air Four Seasons. Don't remember the exact model, but list was $2100. It was worth every penny. Plus, you got a workout every time you turned it -- it weighed something north of 150 lbs.

I have back problems and some other related to the mattress I end up on. I have tried all the domestic ones from $1000 to $4,500 all were very disapointing in one or more ways. The biggest problem was wear. Some are good, but only last a couple of years and then kaput. The Dux works well for any back problems, but not as well for some issues that can cause cramping. I have had one for a couple of years and it still rests well. But I am still not satisfied and still looking. At these prices however I am reluctant to just buy and try.

The concept of air works incredibly well, when you are using an alternating pressure mattress. There is continuous, lateral flow & the pressure is variable. The perfect number bed does NONE of these. The clinical settings of hospital burn units & over a million skilled nursing beds in the USA & millions more worldwide show what works & does not. The prevelence & incidence of decubitus ulcers in thousand of Skilled nursing beds were reduced from 6% to .4% with tempurpedic mattresses.
Comparing clinical mattresses with detailed pressure mapping & clinical outcomes is comprabl;e to looking at endurance races, such as 24 hr Daytona or 12 hr Sebring.

The walls of the visco-elastic cells for Tempur-Pedic are three times thicker than the competitors.

I just completed a sleep study on a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Its not for me, causes sever cramps and continuous foot and leg pains. Also hot and confining. I have heard the hot and confining from a significant number of sources as well.

Odd thing is that I sleep best on a hard concrete floor or the ground. Its just not very comfortable.

I have found that beds are a lot like cars. The cheap ones feel and perform like crap. The wanna bees work good for a single lap or so and then break, the good solid performers, well in the bed world its like 1973 was in the auto business. Then theres the high performers, the Porsche S, The BMW M6, the corvete Z6, the Ferrari, and then theres the ultra high performers, like the new Bugatti, Rolls, Lambraghni and I can't spell them but you get the point. It would be nice to try them all, side by side, but it gets a tad expensive for us retired folks.

If the looney left has it their way here we will soon all have $20k mattresses. $2k for the mattress, $18k in "taxes" to support all their looney programs. Then only union officials and politicians on the take can afford them, just like in Europe.
