OT How many cars do you have?/how many is enough
I was just in my car chewing on the earlier boxer topic - thinking how nice it would be to have a Boxster S.
I then thought about the other day when I saw a nice old Land Rover Series II and told my wife we should stop and ask about it - and she said "NO! - we have enough cars" I have: Toyota Land Cruiser '98 - for taking trips in the winter - skiing - going to camp - Etc. You have to have a car like this in the northeast Pontiac Montana '00 - with the video system (company car -wife drives it). Have to have this to take trips with the kids or haul 6 people comfortably. 930 '79- have to have a P-car - enough said. I call it high speed meditation. TR-6 - Had it since I was 16. Have to have a convertible cruising around town car (I don't trust it for trips). Chevy 3/4 ton Pick Up '79 - tough as nails - have to have a work truck to plow snow - haul branches - work around the house etc. These are 5 essential vehichles. I could not live without any one. Keeping all of these cars running, serviced, inspected, insured, clean, garaged, etc is a chore and a significant expense - but also a labor of love. And I figure I could probably keep a couple of more =:-0 I could use: Boxster for long trips with the top down - Above mentioned Land Rover or early military Jeep (w/ winch and nerf bars)for going deep into the woods and not scratching the TLC. An S series Benz or 740i would be nice for long distance high speed cruising. I could go on (and on and on). I just wondered what other people's thoughts were on what are essential vehicles and how many is enough. Regards, Jeb |
I was able to line up all of my dream vehicles just before starting a family and having kids:
1987 Porsche 911 - no explanation necessary 1995 Range Rover - one of the best production off-road vehicles you can buy. I off-road quite a bit and it take the punishment and comes back for more. 1999 Harley Davidson - for those warm days when I feel like going cruising. Although lately I've been having thoughts of selling the Harley and picking up a Mini Cooper instead. They should be appearing soon at your local BMW dealership. Boris |
Four total, probably one too many.
S10/V8 - daily driver, parts hauler, tow vehicle, highway dominator. Volvo Waggon - wifes daily driver, kid waggon. 911SC - of course, bain of wifes existence. '75 Chevy Monza street machine. 400ci w/dual quads. Had it sinse new, we taught each other a lot. |
I just sold my 4th car ('89 Cherokee), and am now back down to 3: my Carrera, my wife's Integra, and our Grand Cherokee. I'm currently shopping for an older BMW, although I don't really need it, and don't really have the space for it, either. My biggest problem is that we only have a 2 car garage, and I need space to shelter and maintain my cars. If I had my druthers and was rich, I'd be doing the Jay Leno thing and stuffing all of my automotive prizes into an airplane hangar. But, then again, I was bitten by the car bug at a very early age, and if I could ever afford it, too many cars would never be enough. I think about car stuff all the time; it's pretty silly, really. I drive my wife crazy with my auto illness, but she is grateful, nonetheless that I'm attracted to Porsches instead of other women!

1997 A6 Avant (for me)
2000 Speedster replica (for me) 1988 Carrera (me again) 1997 Escort (wife) 1993 Escort (17 year old son) 1992 Toyota 1/2 ton (22 year old daughter) Maintaining and paying for all these cars (and a 1996 John Deere tractor!) is a real burden. My wife urges me to sell one of the sports cars, but ... I can actually fit the top 4 cars into a 3 car garage, putting the A6 in diagonally, after the Speedster and the 911! |
I'm trying to keep it at 3:
'73 RS clone - mostly track car should be completed within a month; Forerunner - wife's. 4WD does well when we go skiing; Tahoe - for towing trailer w/car to track. I'm trying to figure a way to maybe just rent a rig when I need to tow. Then I can lose the SUV & trailer, and wife says OK to an SC daily driver. ------------------ Brian '73RS (soon) |
no wonder some other nation's hate Americans. they're starving for food with no shoes on their feet while we own 5 or 6 cars in the driveway and complaint about high taxes.

three,
our 924 is the "race car project" slated for completion in 2004. it will be HSR Sports Challenge / PCA GT-5S class. our 944 is the "concours car" that doesn't get the crap beaten out of it like the 924 does. it's pampered and cozied (but once in a while i really lean on it). our VW Scirocco 16V is the daily "we can 4-wheel drift this more because the tires are cheaper" car. obin |
1985 Landcrusier FJ60 -the family,take more than
2 people and go on trip ride. 1983 Toyota P.U. 4x4 -all around go to work, desert, go to the dump , not afraid of getting scratched war wagon.Bomb proof. 1967 912 P-car -pet project with no engine. 1966 VW bug-the wifes daily driver. 1963 Plymouth Valient-daughters first car.parking lot proof. If it breaks or gets hit, just walk away. 1962 Ford Galaixe-clean,but what was I thinking. For sale. 1967 Norton 750 G15CS-they will probably bury me on it. 1965 Honda trail 90-hey, it was only $50 ------------------ 1967 912 "in progress" |

"no wonder some other nation's hate Americans. they're starving for food with no shoes on their feet while we own 5 or 6 cars in the driveway and complaint about high taxes." ... And the point is??? America then accepts them as refugies for some silly reason. They come to America live well and get fat while *****ing about America through the sides of thier mouths for the next 100 years. If they hate America sooo much why do they come here and why do they accept our charity? If it is so great in generic far off land why don't they go back? I think the only solution is to sell all our 911s and give the money to 3rd world charity (screw America's poor because they do not count) and bike to work... LOL!!! My years of being a visionary do-gooder have dwindled and sputtered out through realization, hardship, and basic survival instinct. I am now perfectly content just keeping my wife and child fed, clothed, and housed. Sorry for the rambling and unpopular non-PC viewpoint. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

For me:
'93 F150 - The beater/parts runner/do anything machine. only 2wd but it has seen a lot of offroad time and it gets used to pull dad's loader and other equip. (I have to drag him out of it kicking and screeming when I need it). '84 911 Targa - The Machine that makes me show up at work with a smile on my face (it fades by the time I make it to the door). '84 Mercury Linx - The car that I used to drive to work. The reason that I have a 911 now is that I caught a dodge 3/4 ton pickup broadside in the passenger side. No one was hurt (I was alone in the car). I still have the car, and plan to make a dune buggy frame and install the engine in it. loads of fun. By the way, can you have to many Porsches?(i think not) ------------------ Ted Stringer nuke3@juno.com '84 911 Targa aka pocketrocket [This message has been edited by Ted Stringer (edited 07-18-2001).] |
Well currently i have 3 cars. Camaro z-28, Fullsize Jimmy, Porsche 911. How many is too many. If you have to store cars at a friends house you have to many. Ask me how i know.

I have:
86' 944 turbo, now relegated to my daily driver...this is the only car I am going to keep, and the only car out of 7 I have owned that I actually like (well...the turbo II rx-7 I had was fun too, but it exploded) 90' toyota celica all-trac turbo, a fun car, but I quit my job to go back to college after a 1 year hiatus, and I don't need 3 cars, and can't afford 3 cars...very very rare car though...only 1400 or so in the US 93' VW fox, it was my daily driver for 2 years, but it has convinced me that VW's are POSes (apparently this model is known for being the biggest POS VW), but I have been told otherwise...it is sitting in a junk yard, not running, smashed by a tree falling on it, but it is still registered under my name because it saves me about $500 a year on insurance being my "daily driver" all though it hasn't moved in about a year. Emissions need to be done on it soon, so I will junk it before then. |

My lineup:
'84 944 - for fun on the sunny days. '94 BMW 325i - daily driver. '84 Ford Ranger 4WD - Deep snow, dump runs, Home Depot runs, all around beater. I have to replace this one, it runs REALLY bad. Custom open-wheel Formula SAE racer - the current project. it's a really long story. I need to put it back together, and make a few new parts. I only have a 2 car garage. The truck stays outside (obviously). I wouldn't want all the rust falling off in my garage anyway. The Formula SAE car fits in the front of the garage with the other cars. Mike |

Have to get the engine back in, re-paint it...and she will be as hot as my wife ...LOL My two kids who are 5, and 6 love the 944 the most, because as they put it.....it was built for a kid (the back seats) ------------------ http://www.alta.net/944/alexs944na.jpg 86' 944 79' 924 (R.I.P) |
