How big of a deal is the Rose parade to you?

Being a native Los Angeleno it is kind of traditional for me to watch the Rose parade New Years... usually accompanied with a little hair of the dog... on rare occasions I have stayed awake through some portions of the parade.

This year I didn't get (very) drunk on new years eve and the weather was awful so I didn't have anything else to do but watch the silly thing (while cooking breakfast and sipping a large Irish coffee).

That got me thinking, do other people around the country watch this thing or is it just a California happing?

Was fun to watch as a kid, was fun to watch with the kids, but now, not so. Party on if that's what you're in to.

I hadn't watched it in years, but my little sister's high school marching band was in it this year so I watched. I couldn't figure out who she was. She got totally soaked! Without some reason to do otherwise I won't watch it again.

This year was fun because the tuba players had to keep dumping rain water out of their instruments.

The Rose Parade is a ritual - if I'm up and watching it with any perception of what's going on, it means I haven't suffered brain damage from New Years Eve.

I went to it twice--in '84 and '85 IIRC. I watch it every couple of years on TV. Usually, my headache hasn't subsided until after the re-runs of the parade are over.

This year, we laid low for New Year's Eve (a nice break). I found the commentary for the parade (especially the girl) to be unbearable.

IIRC, a local radio station used to provide "alternate commentary" for the Rose Parade, which made it tolerable.

But the official commentators have progressively dumbed down their material to the point that it could be used to get secrets out of al Quaeda leaders.

I've grown to loathe Stephanie Edwards and Bob Eubanks' coverage. I mean, listening to those two fawn all over every marching band and float is enough to make a New Years hangover feel like Dustin Hoffman getting a root canal in "Marathon Man."

Didja see that this year's parade? Stephanie was outside in the rain. Rumor has it she and Eubanks had a little spat and the producer told her to do spot coverage under an umbrella.

I don't know - I'd rather see Howard Stern do Rose Parade coverage. Or the guys from "South Park."
