I think I'll go for the 400 HP @ 6,000 RPM and 400 LB-FT @ 4,400 RPM version. Only $18k over list price.

I think it was Car & Driver that just tested the Mallett Solstice. With options (as pictured on the black car in cashflyer's post) it was $51000. It also weighs in at 3200+ lbs. Why not just buy a C6 Vette for about the same $$ ?

Race Ecotecs have hit 1000hp turbocharged, stock block. That's a lot of boost. Try that with a 951/911.

The 951 weighs about 2900, I don't see the fuss. We all know they're in 911 territory, as well.

The Solstice GXP has more power than the 951S, both stock. It'll move.

Len, the quad cam is known for being no good, I'm with you there. The OHV engines are much better.

I know what you mean on the 3.4, the 3.8L was/is a VERY reliable motor for grocery getters, they just run forever.

I prefer the Mullet Soltice.

Boy, that Sky looks like it had some heavy Viper influence on the front end.

I hope they come out with a hardtop Solstice GXP. I'd consider selling my 951...

The Exige is a great track car, and yours is gorgeous. Love it in that color! I'd put my $51000 in that before the Mallett.

May be of interest: With a 180 pound driver, the $51000 2100 lb Exige and the $30000 2900 lb Solstice GXP have about the same power to weight ratio (about 12 pounds per horsepower).

The torque to weight ratio (acceleration) is quite different. The 138 ft-lb Exige has to move 16.5 pounds for every ft-lb. The Solstice has only 11.8 pounds for every ft-lb, and at much lower rpm (max torque of Exige occurs at 6800rpm).

For the same $51000, the Mallett LS2 Solstice (at 3200 lbs), doesn't change the power to weigh ratio from the GXP. The torque, however, is 8.5 lbs / ft-lb.

Power isn't everything. The Exige is still a tremendous track car and an apples to oranges comparison, but interesting nonetheless.

The Elise with Sport pack, lifestyle paint (like Rodeo's), touring pack, and LSD w/ traction ctl would be the same $$ ($50700+/-), power, and weight as the Exige. So no difference in how the numbers play out.

You are looking at an Elise with the hardtop on, touring pac, no sport pac (mistake on my part). It cost $45,500 out the door in October of 04. The Exige is the better track car, only because of the areo bits. The Exige generates 100 pounds of downforce at speed. Otherwise I think it's identical to a hardtop Elise with sport pack.

Downforce on a production car is a rare and beautiful thing

Getting in and out of my car with the top on is not easy, but at least in the summer I can hop in and out without bending below that 41" roof line, across that 7" wide sill, and then down another 3-4" inches to plop into the seat. I'm not sure I could live with the Exige, except as a pure track toy.

HP per pound is a much better figure to use then torque per pound. A few years ago I ran some eletricrace cars, the torque was phenominal in the low end - talking faster launches in 2nd then 1st gear (I pulled out the stuff for 1st gear two years ago.) Thing is, by 15,000RPM, most of that torque is gone. Torque at the wheels at a given speed would be better, as that factors in gearing. (which HP does to). Neither figure by itself will mean one is better then the other, driving it and seeing what the engine can do is best. This year, my eletric will be doubling power output by changing to a special motor design that hist turbine speeds, I can regear it for more accelration, and there is no torque loss. (upwards of 50,000RPM). I've wired it up and run it, but lack the gears and mounts for my car yet.

That said, I'd prefer a Miata to the solstice. Preferbly a previous generation. I love barebones cars without flashy interiors. Someday I want a pre 85.5 944 again, I love its simple old dash.

Infinite torque at zero RPM = no power!
