Republican hypocrisy -- Now more than Ever
 

This needed its own thread, IMHO.

The same crowd that panders to the religious right by condemning "situational ethics" has difficulty finding its moral compass.

Like the Republicans who condemned Bill Clinton for firing cruise missiles at OBL.

Or criticized our actions in Kosovo and explained it wasn't 'unsupportive' to the troops?

Or criticized our involvement in Haiti as "nation-building."

Or mocked Bill Clinton for dropping a couple of bombs on an "aspirin factory" on false intelligence while defending the invasion of an entire country on even weaker and previously-contradicted intel?

There are plenty of other, smaller instances, like Henry Hyde bringing his mistress along to the hearings over Bill Clinton's lie about an affair.

Democrats do it too. Nobody's pure here, but the consequences of the pettiness of the Republican party factored in to 9/11 by distracting the president, the FBI, Congress and the American people from the growing al Quaeda threat. And it's time someone addressed that.

I have to say I’ve thought of this, too. While OBL was planning his attack, all three branches of our government were preoccupied with stains on a dress. How silly that seems now that we look back.

Certainly, the republican conrgess had something better to do. But at least in a “post 911 world” they are focused on the really important stuff….. like the college football BCS!

Face it, we were ALL asleep at the wheel when it mattered most. My father in law (a WWII combat vet that walked literally across North Africa in pursuit of Rommel, then all the way up Italy and into Berlin) says we were in the same state pre-WWII. Not so much with the Germans, because that wasn't really considered our problem (again), but with the Japanese. We were far too distracted with our own problems to be paying attention to anything else. Granted our problems of that era were far more serious, but the net effect was the same.

The lesson learned might be that we will always have enemies; enemies that will take advantage of us the moment we drop our guard. And not just militarily, or in the form of some kind of violent attack. It has happened economically as well.

Maybe our internal politics have finally become too divisive for our own good. We have been attacked twice in the modern era. The first time, we were busy trying to rebuild a nation economically; working together on that. The second time we were dealing with a President's personal indescretions; fighting each other on that, on some contrived political battlefield made up for us by our favorite parties' leaders. My how times have changed. My how they have played us...

Clinton should have resigned (or simply told the truth), instead he decided to divert attention by bombing Serbian civilian targets to help out the KLA Islamofascists in Kosovo...quagmire?...yep.

Higgins, according to the neo-communists in the Democrat party, and fastpat of course, disarming will lead to peace on earth and good will toward men...You're just a unilateral warmonger oil-crony war of aggression Bush'ist.

Polacks luv to argue about Politics and current events....I have yet to see a smart Polack who doesn't....and for the most part they fall on the Liberal side of the spectrum...

My kids would be allowed and encouraged to think for themselves (encouraged at the appropriate times of development, of course).

As should everyone's children. If we cannot do as good or better than our parents, and raise kids that have improved, then its a waste of time IMHO.

Our children are our future and it really saddens me to see parents turn their kids over to babysitters all the time so that they can chase the almighty buck. If you are going to have kids, thats a full time job for both parents but some sure do not realize it in this world...

Well, in defense of working mothers, our society today, it's pretty hard to live decently and raise kids on one income. The husband needs to go to undergrad and grad school to obtain a job that will afford him to decently support a family nowadays. We all know not everyone is capable of that, so... That shifted some time ago. Have you explored living costs on say, a mechanic's wage? Try to buy a simple house with the only criteria being a safe community on a mechanic's wage alone, not even considering decent schools....

So the choice they're faced with becomes: crime-ridden area, or mom working.

But I agree, it would be nice if our society setup could support what you describe, but it's not attainable at this time.

Past the financial aspect, yes, raising children is a full-time job. It disturbs me that our kids are so coddled anymore. In general, they're so spoiled. The most important thing is the latest XBox and what video game they're going to buy. The TV is the babysitter. Reading books and playing scrabble are things of the past (generally speaking). Discipline...what's that?

The food items we feed our kids. OMG. We're the spaghettios and McDonalds generation. Potato chips and soda galore. I personally think this has come "popular" because parents are too lazy to cook vegetables and actually sit down with their kids to eat them. Of course you don't have to do anything to encourage them to eat junk. It's nuts the garbage parents feed their kids nowadays! Again, this is generally speaking.

Sidenote: a tip for those who have young children, one way to foster independent thinking and hone decision-making skills is to have them make meal choices. This does not mean potato chips and broccoli. This means a choice between broccoli and carrots. Chicken or pork roast. etc.
