welcome to the family blontie

Some of you regulars to the OT section may be aware, and the whole lot of Bay Area Pelicans are of my problems keeping my dog, mcqueen in the yard. Well the road has been long and frustrating, de-nutting him, fence extensions, medication, and an electric fence/collar all have failed. ive taken to keeping him chained the 10 hours i am away from the house each day. well i think i may have found my salvation in the newest member of the family, goldie the yellow lab.

To make a long story short, a vet buddy of mine had a friend who passed away and had two dogs he left. his wishes were to keep them together in his last days but i could not take the both of them when this 1st came up a month ago, so i let things run their course. they stayed at the humane society for about a month and the staff decided they would have to be broken up to be moved. i got a call that blondie was available.

my thinking was that if mcqueen had another to lean on during the day he might not be so dead set on escape. well one day in he stayed put all day while i was at work and blondie is awesome. she is 8 yo so she's kinda mellowed, and considering what she's been through the last month or so is a getting very well adjusted to her new sorroundings. i like her more than mcqueen already.

here is a shot from my new xmas present digital camera, 1st up load to pelican and you see they seem to be getting along swimmingly. no problems with the cat, lyttles. they went nose to nose and just sniffed a bit. considering my cat was raise with dogs he deserves the proppers for not freaking, i suppose.

i am in the process of changing her name, going from goldie to blontie. yeah blontle, with the "t" hit hard. goldie sounds too gay to yell at the dog park, or at the coast. blontie was clint eastwoods charcter in the good, the bad and the ugly. do you remember what eli wallach's charcter called clint eastwood? blontie! i know someone will say "he's the man with no name in the credits". yeah you're right, but lets not split hairs, i will be sweeping 2x as much from the floors from here on out.

i hope the pics loaded propper.

Look at it this way: McQueen will have shown Blontie his escape route(s) within a week. How do you think packs of dogs get started?

Nice dogs!

I've had Bandy (on the left) for 4 years. She was a rescue that was beat up, skinny, pregnant and afraid of the world when I got her. She's now the happiest dawg I know. Clementine came to live with us 8 months ago from a rescue group. Life had been rough for her too - had lived on the street, had pups, had to be darted to catch and nearly died. She's still askirt of people at first, but it starting to warm up. Bandy is teaching her how to play and enjoy life. Being without my dawgs would suk.

Mark: That is a great pic...They almost look like bookends. As far as the statement about Bandy being the happiest Dawg you know, you really need to spend more time with Charlie...

A thing folks tend to forget is that dogs are simply not wired to be alone. The feelings of abandonment and separation anxiety come when ever they are not with their "pack" (read: the family). I have two great danes for the very reason. McQueen and Blontie will be very good for each other and you.

5 days in

so far so good in helping to keep mcqueen in the yard.

gary, i kinda knew that was the case but resisted in getting a second dog because of the additional luggage, if you will. she has been a godsend though.

a few days in she is the sweetest dog ive ever had. she has got a few habits i am attempting to break her of, like getting up on the couch while i sleep at night. i have busted her twice and raise my voice at her. she takes it very hard, really hurts her feelings. when ive booted her out for that and let her back in an hour or so she totally remembers shes in hot water. she comes up and gets all close and tries to say sorry almost. she is one of those dogs that shows her teeth and kinda smiles. whenever she meets someone new, or tries to say sorry to me she is all smiles.

cliff, my house is all wood floors so its not a vacuum but a sweep thing, but still needing to be done much more often now. she has a different textured fur than mick and it seems to fall out a lot more. when i committed to having "inside" critters some years ago all the carpet in the house was removed. hairballs rolling on the floor is preferred to carpet with it ground in.

thats is a great line from that movie chris, cant wait for you to meet her. she will love the fact that you will play ball with her in the house
