Local So Cal Ski Areas? What's good for learning to snowboard?

My kid will be raised to ski. Snowboarding is for punks.

i have a cabin in Wrightwood.

Mt. high is ok, you really only want to go after a storm, but it can be decent. I'd much rather go to big bear. Snow is typically pretty hard packed at mt. high, as they make the majority of the snow.

But if it rains hard... Friday night, hit the cabin, hit the captain, and ski all weekend

that man is my hero.

They do not exist...Tahoe and Mammoth are as close as you are going to get.

Yes, when the nuclear winter comes hope you enjoy getting around on your snowboard! Hope you're always uphill of your destination...

Just visited friends in Redondo Beach. We went up to Big Bear. There are two mountains at the resort, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. Bear Mountain is more geared towards snowboarding while Snow Summit (where i went) is more geared towards skiing. Unfortunately, they have very little snow there right now so check to make sure that they have some right now. When I was there they only had about 1/3 of the runs open, but it was in pretty good condition considering. Hope you have fun

I have ski'd forever and have recently started boarding. I grew up surfing, so it was totally natural, even with my oversize stature. Boarding is super fun and I think I prefer it to skiing. I am not a punk or a poser and I think some of those little ****s on snowboards outta be shot. It's all about respect and skill.

I'd recommend you spend a week(end) at Mammoth and enjoy the snow, not the crap in the hills above LA.

Was at Snow Summit last week Wed & Thur - snow boards dominate the mountain - like 75% at least. The snow was decent and they had runs top to bottom of mountain. I'm planning on taking snow board lessons alongside my 8 year old son in a couple months when we head up to Mammoth.

BlueSky - sking is for the older (my) generation. Get your kids on a snowboard.

dmoolenaar - aircooled motors are for the older (my) generation. Get your kids in a Type-R.

That the difference, I guess. These days I go to the slopes with family, not friends.

Many years in the past I went with friends, and we all felt the same way about snowboarders. Most of us still do. ;)

Mostly, they just sit down on the slope in bunches, like a bunch of speedbumps.

Their lines seem to be at different angles to the lines taken by skiers. Never had a collision with another skier...but been nailed by a couple of boarders. Maybe it's just an attitude thing...like they skip the part about general courtesy when they put the board on.

Thankfully it's been a few (glorious) years since I've even seen a snowboarder...we go to Alta for downhill.

It's what they don't do that bothers me. Try carving a turn once in a while.

They typically are punk kids with little respect for anyone else on the slopes. They think nothing of sliding over and scratching your skiis while waiting in a lift line. They often are dressed like slobs. Many are basically just a stain on the once somewhat noble sport of skiing.

This is not to say that all boarders are of this ilk, especially nowadays, but this is the reason I and many other skiers who grew up skiing in the 60's thru the 80's do not like them.

FWIW, I do not care much for any of the "sports" that involve doing tricks for points. I love motocross racing but hate freestyle contests, I like car racing but dislike drifting contests, I like bicycle racing but dislike body tattood/freestyle competitions.

I guess at 39 this makes me "old fashioned". Oh well, I guess everyone has an opinion, now you know mine.

I started snowboarding back in '88, was a minority then and many slopes didn't want us. Skiers were rude and condescending to me all the time. It's sad to see there are still those that carry the same banner.

There are just as many novice and intermidiate skiers that clog the trails, stop in the middle of nowhere and blast haphazardly down the trail.

It is the lack of courtesy and common sense that are the problem, two traits that are inherently lost on the majority of today's youth. This is apparent nearly everywhere in society, not just with punk snowboarders.

I wonder how many resorts would be closed today had it not been for the growth of snowboarding to bring money and people back to the mountains.
